1970 Mach 1 Fastback
1970 Mach 1 Fastback
A freind of mine is selling his Mach 1 fastback and I need the advice on what to look for and what a good price would be for it. It is a project car needs a new interior, needs paint, exhaust and passenger floor pan. The car has new tires on it, headers, has been completly stripped, aftermarket hoodscoop, hood pins and couple of spots with a small amount of bondo. Has a 351 Windsor, automatic tranny, everything seems to be complete other than finishing touch work really.
What do I really need to look at next time I go back over there and what is a fair price for it? he is asking $2800 is that resonable? The car will end up being a gift to my mom since she had one as her first car and as such wont be a show car or trailer queen.

the price is MORE than reasonable
providing
the tourque boxes are not rotted out
(where the bottom of the firewall, the floorpans and the front subframe between the rocker panels on both sides "connect")
major "flexing" point on mustangs,falcons,fairlanes...etc..
good luck ...so far it sounds good
...zap!
I'd run the VIN. See what the car originally came with.
Honestly, $2800 is about right for a project 1970 Mustang Mach with just the 351 with Auto. That's not bad at all if it is driveable.
When you say that you're replacing the floor pan, that's where the biggest hit comes on the value. As long as you are sincere in it being just a driver, and not a show car, you won't be disapointed. If you decide otherwise, you could still get $12K to $20K for a well restored non-show condition Mach. Just make sure that your VIN shows it as the MACH 1, and not just the fastback. The body code will be 63C. If it is a 63A, it's just a standard fastback with the optional 351.
Just a warning though. The 69 and 70 Mustangs are the most expensive Mustangs to restore. The interior parts are very easily 3 times the price of the 64 1/2 thru 73 era Mustangs. It is actually cheaper sometimes to find a very nice 69 coupe for $3K-$5K, and use the interior parts (handles, *****, window cranks, door panels, dash pad, gauges, etc...) engine peripherals, hood, carpeting, and whatever else that isn't model specific. You won't believe what OEM and aftermarket parts go for, and I've found flawless coupes that little old ladies have been driving for years.
Whatever you do, do it quick, because if that car is decent, someone will snag it quickly for that price. Just writing about it has made me want it, and I haven't even seen it yet.
Good luck.

All '70 Mach 1's are fastbacks, so saying Mach 1 Fastback is redundant. It's just Mach 1. Thank you.
I think it's pretty hard to estimate a value on an older fixer upper car without seeing it and inspecting it. Is the steering box shot? Does the heater core leak? Does it have any valuable options like louvers or spoilers? Magnum 500 wheels? etc....
Cool gesture looking for a gift for your mom and I hope it works out, but you could be in for a major project...
