Fuel problem, need help

I have a 2002 Ford F150 supercab XLT.
Last night the truck wouldn't start after driving to the store.
The gas gauge indicated that the tank was half full but the engine would not turn over, as if, I was out of gas.
I added 3 gals of gas and the engine started.
I went straight to the gas station to fill the tank and it would only take an additional 8 gals.
Apparently the gas gauge was correct, but why wouldn't it start?
Also, what happens when I'm down to 1/2 tank again?

Any help/advice is appreciated.

might be a problem with the PATS.
If PATS wont allow a start... the engine will turn over, but not catch. Just like being out of gas.

You might want to start there.
