LOOKIE what i FOUND!~!!!

We're getting ready to move into a house on some land. While cleaning out the garage of the house we're moving to, i think i found a goldmine perhaps.

There is a case of these. There are about 20, in mint condition. You guys think they're worth anything?

That case was probably purchased for less than a gallon of gasoline costs today. Dunno if it's worth anything, but it is certainly neat.

The can might be worth something, especially with the Esso name. Don't know whether it would be worth more empty or full. I am sure though you could find someone who collects them.

My old man used to have a few cans of Shell 10W-30 in the garage. The oil eventually soaked through the cardboard part of the cans. The rating of the oil was SB. He joked that he wouldn't use it to lube the door hinges any more.

Seriously, the oil isn't anywhere near the standards of today's oil. Back when that stuff was made, 60K miles was a lot of miles on a car and 100K was almost unheard of, not to mention undeniable proof that the car was completely worn out. I wouldn't recommend using it in any motor. It might work ok for squeaky door hinges.

Here's a site that sells a book about collecting oil cans.

http://www.gaspumps.info/oilcans.shtml

Just do a google search on "oil can collecting". You will find a lot of sites, including forums on it.

The cans are full, no sign of leakage anywheres. I wouldn't dare use it. I'm going to mount them in the workshop somewheres. Who would ahve thought there would be a whole book about collecting oil cans? I didnt see any on ebay, maybe its because you cant ship oil?

I live in what could very well be the antique mall capital of the world.

In each and every one there is more than one huge display of old oil cans both used and full. I've seen prices start at $5 per can and go to upwards of $100 per can. I don't know how may actually get sold, nor why some are high and other so much lower. But I do not recall ever seeing an entire case anywhere. I go antiquing occasionally, I'm not an avid collector but just like to browse occsaionally.
