Review Of Doom
Review Of Doom
Well if you’re into gaming this a good movie for you. I took my daughter (15.95) and son (12), to see it this afternoon and we enjoyed it. We are avid gamers and Sci-Fi fans and knew the basic story line. Here are some points for you to ponder.
The Good
-The Rock did a great job, as usual, as he was intense and professional.
-The final fight scene was filled with boots to the head, body slams, and improvised use of expedient weaponry. I liked the part where the Rock jammed that metal rod through the other guy's hand.
-The first-person shooting scene was outstanding. I found myself trying to manipulate my invisible XBox hand control. To no avail.
-There were a lot of suspense scenes where my daughter just about tore my arm out of the socket. This was a good measure of effectiveness.
The Bad
-They could have left out the bad language. Too much use of the "F" word.
- I would have liked to have seen a greater variety of monsters and weapons (see the vide game) but it was still worth it.
-If you know the game, you know there should have been scenes outside of the containment. This would have opened up the film to a Planet Mars type landscape. I can only imagine the creativity that could have been introduced.
Overall I gave it an A-. I understand that there is no way to have included all the details, background, weapons, monsters, etc, as in the video game. I would consider the movie only a small sampling of some of the best parts of the game. We will buy it when available on DVD. Enjoy.

Questions:
I know nothing of the game . . . (in fact I didn't know it was a spin off of a game until a few weeks ago).
That said, is the story self-contained enough so that someone such as myself, who has no idea whatsoever what Doom is about, would understand it, or enjoy it?
I think Dwayne Johnson has the potential to be the next Arnold and a lot more. He can actually act pretty well and I don't think his range has even been tested, I think he could do a lot more than action films. I had no idea he was a wrestler (never watch wrestling) so I know nothing about "The Rock" persona or what it's about, but he comes off quite well on film.
The Rundown was quite a surprise. Had no intention of watching it until told by numerous people that it was good. He's impressive.

Yep- that's why Ahhhnold was in The Rundown- an unspoken indication of the passing of the torch...
It was good, but-- when I saw Rock on WWF, I knew he'd go beyond that... You can tell when some folks got it. He's so slim now; he'll never have the on-screen presence of Arnold- but, we all know Rock's body can hold 275 of solid muscle. He said in an interview that he was down to 220 when he played in The Rundown.
I am not sure if someone who is unfamiliar with the game may come away with the satisfaction I did. Recommend that if you have an XBox then go rent the game. If not, I would say it is similar to movie Resident Evil.
I think the Rock is a great actor due to his commanding presence and being well spoken. He does not use slang and he looks directly at you when he speaks.

I liked Resident Evil, so maybe I'll like Doom. I've never played either BTW.

Although the breadth of my knowledge, wisdom, and experience is great, there are a few things that even I am ignorant of.
One of those things is video games. Another (as you may have noticed) is "professional" Wrestling.
Those two things are responsible for much of the drop in the collective IQ of mankind and I have no interest in them and try to keep my distance from them.
I suppose I could learn all about them and be able to address them if the subject were brought up in Just Ask Kobi™, but honestly, what would be the point? If questions on this topic do arise, I will defer them to you. (One thing Kobi does know about is how to delegate authority.)
Sorry to disappoint you dude, but I am, after all, only human (not to mention, really tired too).

A lot of smart people like the WWE, as well. However, I don't know very many people who consider themselves to be intelligent, or sophisticated, that will even give it a chance. Simple fun is simply meant for the simple minded. At least, that's the impression I get.

Im sorry I havent seen the movie yet, but I don't agree with this. First they are Marines, they probably curse on the way to church. Second if I was facing demons from hell, you bet I would be cursing too.
I just saw the movie a few days ago and I would have to disagree with the first review. Id give Doom a "D".
The Good: As said the Rock's acting was fairly good. The First person shooter was a nice change of pace from the rest of the movie and the part with the chainsaw was the best part of the whole movie.
The Bad: The movie did not follow the game at all. The plot was just another Resident Evil all over again. The only thing the game and the movie had in common is that they both took place on Mars and both invloved a government funded company doing research that goes wrong. The most used weapon in the whole computer game, the shotgun, is left out. The second coolest gun in the movie (the mini-gun) is only fired for two seconds and the coolest is only fired twice. The scene where the computer says each characters name when they get their weapon is stupid.
I really can't belive that ID (the company that made the game) bought on that and that whoever wrote made that movie though it would be good.
If you have never played the original Doom (or Doom 3) then it probably didnt have as big of an impact on your life as it did on mine so you might enjoy it.

So, what your saying is that everyone that plays video games or watches wrestling is ignorant? I had no clue that watching a televised event would make one "dumb".
That's a little shallow, especially for a man of your intelligence.
