Microsoft is really good at subversively distributing their own proprietary technology disgused as a universal standard. They did it with Java, XML, and they're doing it with their latest browser. The idea is to suck in the software engineers of the world into unknowingly using something that microsoft will start charging for later on.

Internet explorer might be the best example of it. I'd guess somewhere around 1/2 of the functionality isn't remotely W3C compatible, it's just cool stuff they put in their software because they know nearly everyone is using it. Ditto on virtually everything .NET.

Also--Al Gore might as well have invented the internet (as he's so often misquoted as claiming). Anyone who knows anything about the founding of eCommerce in this country knows who got the ball rolling over the protests of big business. If the current administration had been around in 1990, I can almost guarantee you we'd be stuck in the gopher:// world and northern europe would be considered the birth place of ecommerce.

And now, the person who really did invent the World Wide Web:

http://www.w3.org/People/Berners-Lee/#Bio

Yep, you guessed it. It was invented in Europe, by a European. He layed the HTTP protocol over the top of our old silo communication system--and bingo.

-Fatz

p.s. Yes, we're basically a DNS entry away from, for all practical purposes, erasing any country from the internet. There's a nice big table out that routes information based on .com, .il, .uk, etc. erasing or rerouting those entries is tantamount to pulling the network cable out of your computer on a really big scale.

Took a break from working to enjoy some G.D. time and this is what I get to read. The list of countries crying for us to give up control to the EU is like a roll call for human rights suppression.

"A number of countries represented in Geneva, including Brazil, China, Cuba, Iran and several African states, insisted the US give up control"

And on that note, with the exception of our British buddies who are obiviously having just a momentary lapse in judgement, we need to send a resoundingly large middle finger in the general direction of the EU. If for no other reason than the U.N. which supports this decision will not support our judgements and consistently slaps Israel with inappropriate labels while allowing the Palestinian Authority in one land and Hezbollah in another to run an entire country that sits on their council. Screw that.

You're on.

From what we have seen on the TV recently, the American Gene pool is incapable of spawning someone smart enough to follow an evacuation plan let alone write code
I didn't see Americans looting laptops, only crates of beer and racks of bling bling clothing.

Could be an interesting contest

Everyone knows the internet was invented by Tim Berners Lee (and Englishman) and not that sneaky American Algore chappie so it must be ours anyway by default.

Look, we need the money it generates. Somebody has to get a cut from the Viagra sales, naked Britney pictures and Nigerian scams.
We might get lower gas prices then

We can be taught. We did the Japan thing with it. It was invented in Europe and we perfected it and took control.

I say we tell them to go f'in build their own. What really kills me is we are already well into the construction of Internet2 and have many critical organizations on it. I say we give them the old web (the current one) and we migrate over to Internet2 and enjoy our 100mb/s bandwidth. Screw 'em.

Funny- in my classes, it was said that the internet was created by the (US) military, along with IBM, as a method of command & control for movemens of units and divisions on the electroni battlefield, in the late 60's/early 70's- with help from IBM. Started with SNA, and migrated into MCS, then into a TCP/IP protocol based solution...

Only in far later years (90's) was the internet moved into the public arena with routers, servers and PC's...

Oh well- who knows...

cia-agent:

You are correct, the internet WAS created in America which began in the military. Now, others may have made improvements to it over time but America is the OWNER who designed and built the foundation of the internet and therefore no one else has claim to it.

If that were true it would be the same as saying if someone modified their truck for more horsepower, therefore making it better and faster, then that person would have ownership over Ford.

To think anyone other then America ALONE designed, created, or engineered the internet is to have a socialist mind like the flucknuts who now think they should have control…

Man, that’s a low blow, bringing in all of Jerry’s kids from N.O. that don’t have functioning brains…

Oh, and for the record, I don't consider England part of the U.K.

Those are the type of questions that make me wanna murder people.

Look, if you can boot your PC, log into this forum, then you capable of doing FREE research on the INTERNET, and learn a few things.

Now, I am by no means calling you, "stupid, dumb, retard, etc". You just dont know....a noob in a way. I'm calling you lazy.

GooGle is your friend. Example: If you want to learn what SMTP is and what is all about...go to GooGle, and type in "What is SMTP".....you will find out all the answers you need to ever know.

Remember the more you play with computers....the faster you will learn. Look at the internet as a large network. When you are looking at a webpage, you are looking at a file on a computer somewhere.

GooGle is your friend.

Uuuhhhhh... Amercia did design, create, and engineer it alone. The Department of Defense did it. Last time I checked, the DoD was in the states.... Oh, and some geeks from MIT worked with DARPA to create ARPANET. ARPANET is what turned into the Internet. And the boys over at Bolt Beranek and Newman (BBN) kicked in a great deal of effort to create ARPANET and more. BBN also came up with what we know as TCP/IP. And BBN is HQ'd in MA. Near MIT... sound fimiliar?

We also formed Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). We write the standards.

And we gave the cry babies plenty of access to help us out. In the late 70s a International Cooperation Board (ICB) was formed to let the international community in on the fun. It's not our fault the rest of the planet was dumb then and didn't chip in.

Fact is we made, we did it ALL, and layed ALL of the groundwork for the Internet as we know it today. To magically come up and say "uhhh, we want you to release control" is like telling Ford Motor Company to give up control of the F150 product line to the internation communinty can build a better Titan. F off and die I say.

Once everyone has their hand in the pot we are screwed. My other idea is to give them the old IPv4 internet and move all of our crap over to IPv6 and screw them over that way. What do they want next? Hell, why not just turn all the technology over from the CIA and NSA as well...
