when is a vehichle considered totalled?

got a call from the adjuster and said so far he has found 9600.00 in damage that he can see,,,,,that is what he can see with the truck sitting in a parkinglot at the ford dealer. i will know more when it gets to a body shop and on a lift to check the frame. the kelley bb is 29,900.00 and the trade in wholesale is about 23,000. any ideas on where the line should be drawn? i would love to get the truck back, just don't want the problems. i will have a lifetime of the truck warranty of some kind i have to work out. please, any feedback is appreciated!
the truck is an 04 fx4 supercab with flareside bed
pretty loaded with extras.....

The figure I've always seen is 70% of the retail value or $20900 in your case. That sounds like a lot of damage but if your estimate gets close they might total it. I do hope everything works out the way you want though, Awrecked vehicle is THE worst feeling.

When the cost of repairs is more than the value of the vehicle.

Depends on the insurance company. Good rule of thumb is when the cost of repairs exceeds 60-70% of the vehicle's retail value.

Mine was at $ 12k and they didn't total it.

I walked into my buddies body shop one day and the vehicle that they had just flatbedded in was so badly damaged that I could not tell what it was until I had spent several minutes looking at it. About a week later I went back to see him again and he was in the process of tearing it down for rebuild. It as a late 90's Chevrolet 4x4 Pickup. The value of the truck and the cost of repairing it were within $2000-$3000 of each other. I was amazed...He said that some Insurance Companies would rather rebuild than replace...

Whether a vehicle is totaled or not is based on whether the cost of repairs plus the salvage value of the vehicle is as much as the value of the vehicle before the accident. The potential for supplemental repairs (hidden damage) will make a difference if the the figures are close.

Looking the pictures over, I agree with 04, I think you're gonna need a big supplement claim to come closer to totaling it out.

well its about half way there now roughly.....that was just a look in a parking lot of what can be seen.....hope it goes well when they put it on a lift and check the frame. my biggest concern was the twisting of a 1500lb wd hitch! if that bent then what did it do to the trucks frame that it was attached to. the pic shows the hitch holding up the truck! maybe it is fine......i would love the truck back if it can be fixed.

I wouldn't be to concerned with the "frame", mine was replaced and they didn't total it.

In Indiana (varies from state to state) a vehicle is totalled if the cost of repair is 70 or 75% of the vehicle value prior to the incident.

From the pics Jim I guarantee you they will fix it and not total it. They actually say a lot for the truck, the doors still open and even looks like the hood would open. I would even be willing to bet the frame is fine, once that trailer started whipping side to side it doesnt take much to jerk the back of a pickup around. I had a 12ft U Haul do that same thing to me years ago but didnt hit anything...trailer was on its side and the hitch ball was bent sideways but truck and hitch was fine. I say the truck will live again easily but the trailer is probably a goner!
