I love Princeton.
GO TIGERS!
Rumson is nice too.
As a kid growing up my Grandparents lived on a river in Bricktown . . . it was nice there.
And, the big city is close enough if you need to go there.
AND . . . they've got lightning bugs!!!!! I love lightning bugs!!!!
I wish we had lightning bugs in CA. I miss lightning bugs.

Anyway, since the majority of you can't figure this out, I started this thread because someone else started a thread about their state & mentioned that one for each state should be started. I figured who better than me to start it since I hate this communist hell hole anyway. Clear as mud???
Just so you know, I CAN'T PUT IN FOR A TRANSFER!!! There are only two bases in the USAF that have my aircraft: McGuire AFB, Wrightstown, NJ & Travis AFB, Vacaville/Fairfield, CA. There are guys in my squadron that have been trying to get Travis AFB for YEARS. If I put my name on the list, I might have a chance at an asignment in about 6 years. CA is the ONLY place in the country I would choose NJ over. The base closure commitee just met a few months back & McGuire/Ft Dix GAINED positions from other base closures. I was born & raised 20 minutes from McGuire, in NJ, which is why I hate this state so much. I saw what it was like 25 years ago. Trust me when I tell you, it sure as hell didn't get better.
So, before anyone gets their panties in a bunch about me slandering the Garden State, get over it. NJ sucks, it's that simple. I honestly don't see how ANYONE could like it here unless they live out in the sticks or have an as$load of cash. Since everyone would like to know why I hate the Garden State, simply put, I can barely afford to live here. I'm reduced to living in a lousy town because I can't afford anywhere else.
1. I live in one of the POOREST towns in my county and houses in my development built over 25 years ago are going for over $325000. Right now, the AVERAGE HOME IN BURLINGTON COUNTY IS ALMOST $450000.
2. The property taxes are the highest in the nation by a large margin.
3. Highest car insurance in the nation. My insurance more than TRIPLED when I moved from Sumter, SC.
4. Third worse gun laws in the country. CA first, MD second. Before anyone says anything about this one, guns laws have ZERO affect on reducing crime.
5. Most densely populated state = traffic that will drive almost anyone crazy. I know of one red light in Mt Laurel that takes almost 45 minutes to get thru during rush hour.
6. NJ DMV is notorious for sticking it to the average Joe. I ALREADY have a NJ drivers license and when I renew it, I must bring 6 FORMS OF ID, that's right 6.
7. Sales tax & State income tax.
I could go on but you get the idea. I never said you can't like the place. If you do like it here, good for you (that IS NOT sarcasm), I'm glad you like it. I don't. Everyone go drink a beer and everyone is happy...

The politics suck and the gun laws suck. Other then that, I love this state for everything you mention + the food.
KC...although I very rarely agree with you on your views of the Great State of New Jersey, I have to respect your opinion and this time agree with you on some of the points you made. I to, feel the real estate is WAY out of control in this state. I think its worse down here at the Shore. People are buying run down shacks in Avalon, Stone harbor, Cape May and Wildwood for over 200k. Then tearing them down and building million dollar homes. Its just crazy. The job market in no way, supports the housing market. Which is a real shame. If it keeps going this way, the locals will not be able to afford to live here and will be forced to move. On the flip side of that, if that does happen, whos gong to work here? whos gong to keep the towns running so all the rich tourists can come for their summer vacations. NJ has got to do something about that.
With that said, I used to live in NY. My car insurance was a lot more there. The property taxes are out of control amnd gas prices are way up there also. Oh yeh, the traffic down here really isnt that bad at all. And now that the tourist season is over, I can go miles without seeing more than 4 or 5 cars somedays.

In an effort to make you feel better, I can offer you this:
(I'll address each of your items in order)
1. I live in one of the POOREST towns in my county and houses in my development built over 25 years ago are going for over $325000. Right now, the AVERAGE HOME IN BURLINGTON COUNTY IS ALMOST $450000.
Son, you don't know the meaning of overpriced housing. The Avg. cost of a house in all of CA is now around 575,000. In the San Fernando Valley, which is now mostly a slum suburb of Lost Angeles, the avg. price of a house is over 600 Grand . . . and that's to live in a run down condo surrounded by illegal mexicans who live 15 - 20 in an apartment. The average cost of a house in a "middle class" neighborhood in LA is now over a million dollars. And wages here are no better than any place else.
2. The property taxes are the highest in the nation by a large margin.
You got us there . . . and big time. Honestly, I can't imagine why there hasn't been a tax revolt like they had here back in the 70's.
3. Highest car insurance in the nation. My insurance more than TRIPLED when I moved from Sumter, SC.
Well then, you've never bought car insurance in Los Angeles. Whatever you're paying for it there, it would be a lot more here.
4. Third worse gun laws in the country. CA first, MD second. Before anyone says anything about this one, guns laws have ZERO affect on reducing crime.
You already mentioned CA was the worst . . . not that it matters. I don't own a gun.
5. Most densely populated state = traffic that will drive almost anyone crazy. I know of one red light in Mt Laurel that takes almost 45 minutes to get thru during rush hour.
Traffic is worse here than anywhere in the country. Not that I trust DOT studies (which confirm this), but I live in it everyday. I go to NJ every year. Sometimes a few times a year. I've driven all over the state at all hours. I drive in New York City all the time. I can say, without reservation, that you guys have nothing on us when it comes to traffic. Not even close. And while I'm on the subject of cars . . . you're gas prices are so low I laughed myself silly when I was last there (August).
6. NJ DMV is notorious for sticking it to the average Joe. I ALREADY have a NJ drivers license and when I renew it, I must bring 6 FORMS OF ID, that's right 6.
The average IQ of a CA DMV employee is lower than the posted speed limit on our freeways. But then, my guess is every state's DMV sucks.
7. Sales tax & State income tax.
Don't know what it is there, but my guess is you kids are higher. Sales tax here is 8.5%, and state income tax varies on income level and how good your tax attorney is.
Honestly, other than taxes, you've got it better in every way.
The grass is always greener. If you are stuck and can't leave, learn to appreciate what you have, and concentrate on what you have that's good . . . trust someone who has been a lot of places . . . no matter where you go, it isn't all that much better . . . there's always something that will stand out as bad. Everyplace has it's down side(s).

I relatively new to NJ (8 years) and am still constantly amazed at what there is in this state.... go pack a nice lunch and take a drive exploring the trails at Wharton State Park.... head up to High Point for an afternoon.... tubing/canoeing on the Delaware... bike riding along the canals on the Dealware in Lambertville... etc, etc, etc....
Anyways... I don't think anyone here doubts your dedication/service - but for God's sake, (and ours!), go out, explore and enjoy!!!!!!!
(one last thing - I don't think ANYONE here would disagree with you that their home town/state has changed dramatically in the past 25 years... it's called "getting older" and something we all have to face)
Brew, it ain't personal towards anyone... I can vouch for your feelings to your neck of the woods. I actually like the Wildwood area, great car show, every year. NJ will only get MUCH, MUCH worse before it gets any better, if it ever does. That frightens me, like I said, I can barely afford to live here now. It seems to me that the majority of people who say NJ is a nice place are:
A. Liberals
B. Yuppies out to make a quick buck on real estate.
C. People in the military who only have to be here for a few years.
D. People who have NEVER lived here and never will.
To be fair, I should post what I DO LIKE about NJ:
1. Most importantly, my family is here (sometimes that can be a not so good thing) and they look out for my wife when I'm TDY.
2. The food is great. I must admit it's some of the best in the nation. Mastoris on RT 130 & Tarantella's on RT 70 are two of my favorites.
3. I do like the beach. (It sucks that they are usually packed so I normally go to Barnegat Light Beach which almost never has crowds)
4. Gas normally is cheaper here than most places in the country.
5. At least there aren't many *****ing hippies here.
6. I'll get back to you, I have to think...
BTW people, The US Constitution say you have a right to freedom of expression remember???

That's funny. Yes I have explored NJ. The Delaware WaterGap Rec Area USED to be my favorite place in the state until all the yuppies found it.Yes, I would be happier in a rural area. I just came back from the Asheville area of NC. I would move there tomorrow with no regrets if I could.
Kobiashi... Like I said, CA is the ONLY place I would pick NJ over... CA has a much higher salary base than NJ so the property prices are probably statistically even. At least CA is a beautiful place to look at. Lake Tahoe seems to be one of the nicest places on earth. All those state parks, etc... Too bad all the liberal pus$ies have ruined it so you can barely enjoy any of it. Mark my words, if the liberals are ever run out of CA and it returns to some sense of "normalcy" I will apply for a transfer.

Was down your neck of the woods a couple weeks ago for the firemans convention in Wildwood. This our favorite time of year when the beaches are empty and the boards are still open. My department barbeques at there motel all weekend long, everyone pitches in to help, great time all around (we keep the drinking down and take care of those who had too much). We have been going for over 10 years, never saw your yellow truck.
However Wildwood is changing, the motels are being knocked down so that high end condos can be built. It will no longer be for average families anymore as they will no longer be able to afford a Wildwood stay. This is sad.
Talk is that the convention will move out in a couple of years, but I know of no other place in NJ where we still can maintain a family mini vacation while convention business is going on. I saw less people down there this year that other years so the lure of Wildwood is fading. I hope that the town does not develope itself out of the very thing that made it a great place to come to.
