Passed out @ Interview!!!!!

Interesting story that happened with me friday that i thought i would share. here goes. I applied for a job that i had seen on the net that involves a railroad company. Im 25 and never had a "career" job that i could retire from. I have no college degree and planned on takeing over my dads business and makeing my life from it. So, while looking at this job discription, i figured, crap, why not apply, i probably wont get it but i will try anyway. I apply. Two weeks go by, i forgot i applied by this time. At 7am thursday morning, im laying in my bed, half dead and the phone rings. Im trying to decide if i want to answer it or not. I answer. The guy on the other end says he is from this company and wants to meet with me friday. I say ok, i will be there. After a cupple hours of thinking about this call, i came to the conclusion that once at the interview they would really discover i had no college degree, and had never done anything closely related to this field, thus saying thanks for comeing and well call you and never hear anything from them again. So, i go to the interview. This guy traveled hundreds of miles to meet with me, which shocked me. He then tells me about the job and all that good stuff. He then ask me a bunch of questions. After everything i was sitting in this hotel conference room. he was looking at my application, saying nothing. He looks up and says "Im going to hire you for this position, the starting pay is 49,000/year, full benefits" and BOOM!!! That was it, i passed out and fell out of the chair!!! Last thing i heard was benefits. Next thing i know, a ambulance crew wakes me up. I refused to go to the hospital and after i got myself together, we finished the interview. He asked me why i passed out and i told him that i couldnt belive he was hiring me for a job like that with no degree or previous experience. this guy was speechless. He said he has never had anyone pass out on him. Anyway, I got the job, 49,000/yr start, full benefits, damn good retirement, and some awesome bonuses as i learn the job.

Congrats! Sometimes it doesn't take a college degree to get a job like that. Actually most companies train you for whatever they need. The degree just says you're up to the task.

Congrats man....thats awesome. Oh and thanks for the story..kinda gives me a little hope. I mean if you have no experience, no degree, sounds like it was a shot in the dark and you didnt care if you got it anyway AND passed out at the interview and still got the job, well then I just might get lucky one of these days as well in my job search / career change.

Just curious, what is your dads business you were going to take over?

Agreed. i have no degree and I'm making about $48k/year. There are a lot of morons with college degrees and a lot of really smart people without them, good companies will be able to look beyond a piece of paper at the actual applicant. I am working towards my degree, because I know my job realistically won't last forever and I"d like education in as many areas as possible, but its been 7 years and I'm a few classes away from my associates... my bachelors will probably take me longer.

I 3rd this. College sucks ('ecept for the parties & honnies on campus). It's a great feeling to first get turned down by a company since you don't have a degree, then they actually look at your resume after the degree idiots inveriew and fail... then you get to turn them down!!! HA! I love it. Ford was one of those companies... love your products, depise your HR snobs! And I still get a-plan through friends, so take that!
