Glimpse of Competition from GM
Glimpse of Competition from GM
First of all I'm not trying to start something here and I'll be up front with the fact that I'm currently driving a Silverado, even though I still claim to be a Ford truck guy. (GM had better deals when I last traded) Anyway with all the doom and gloom surrounding the American auto industry I've sort of changed the way I look at things.... Ford vs Chevy will always be fun, but in my opinion the biggest opponents are the Japanese. I was excited to see Ford put the emphasis on doing the current gen F150 the right way. As I said I drive a Chevy, but there is no comparison to the interior of a F150 vs it's current GM competition. Today, however is a big day in GM land as the first official pix of their new Tahoe were released. We all know that if Ford one ups GM they will do their best to one up Ford and so on. Competion is good and I thought you guys would like to see what the competition is up to as undoubtedly a lot of the styline cues from the Tahoe will find their way into the 07 Silverado much as the Expedition gave some clues to what the current F150 would be like. Of course I know it won't be long before Car and Driver or Consumer Reports finds some reason to trash our "inferior" American trucks, but looks like the General has been learning his lessons. Maybe this all bodes well for the Americans and the coming years. Let's hope that Ford revives the Hurricane engine program. GM's engine specs look impressive.

2007 GM Tahoe Engine Specs
4.8L iron block (RPO LY2), rated at 290 horsepower (216 kw)*
5.3L iron block (RPO LY5) with Displacement On Demand technology, rated at 320 horsepower (238 kw)* (including E85-capable version – RPO LMG)
5.3L aluminum block (RPO LC9) with Displacement On Demand technology and E85 capability, rated at 320 horsepower (238 kw)*
6.0L iron block (LY6) heavy-duty engine with variable valve timing, rated at 350 horsepower (260 kw)*
6.0L aluminum block (L76) with Displacement On Demand technology and variable valve timing, rated at 355 horsepower (264 kw)*
6.2L aluminum block (L92) with variable valve timing, capable of 380 and 400 horsepower (283 kw to 298 kw)*
A new Hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed automatic transmission is matched with the 6.2L engine. It has a wide, 6.04:1 overall ratio – including two overdrive gears – that helps deliver an excellent balance of performance and fuel economy. The 6L80’s six forward gears have smaller “steps” between them, compared to a conventional four-speed automatic, which bolsters both performance and the feeling of smoothness. Shorter steps between the gears help the transmission quickly find the best gear for the vehicle speed and road conditions, with less back-and-forth hunting on grades – a trait that is particularly helpful when towing. Also, the 6L80 has a “tap up/tap down” capability that allows the driver to manually select upshifts and downshifts with a button on the column shifter.

Thanks, so far so good. Maybe thats why I like the new GM interior.... it does look a little ford like (except for that gold bowtie on the steering wheel) Bet that whenever the 07 Chevy comes out the auto press will be harping on the new and "Great" new Tundra, just like they did with the new and "Great" Titan was introduced in 04. Ford sells more F150's in a month than Nissan does Titans in a year. Hope that holds true for Chevy and Tundras in the future as well. America needs a strong Ford and GM.

doesnt look all that bad but GM cant design a good looking interior to save their life. Like stated above I wouldnt own a GM basically because of their interior. This is an improvement but far from perfect.... what... no console shift????
I was in my buddys C5 vette the other night and it looks like fisher price designed and built the dash.... I will say though I loved the interior in my 96 vette... but whatever. I do think the exterior looks pretty decent.

I like it. Competition is what it's all about. That is a sharp interior (except that the wood grain may be cheesy in real life), and the engine choices and tranny look interesting. Let's see what they do to the frame and safety features.

Yeah...the fake woodgrain in my wife's Eddie Bauer Explorer is cheesy too.
