What do you consider when looking for a new job???

Long story made short, I work for a good company, have a good job working where I grew up. You could say I have it made, except that there is a reorg in work and it has me nervous. Not lose my job nervous, but I have a feeling that I may not like the new management. I am somewhat concerned about what might happen. I feel that it will be either craptacular or most excellent but I am not sure. I have been told by several influential people that I have nothing to worry about I will be treated very well, but some of the rumors make me very uncomfortable. Ok, enough about that on to the real question. What all do you consider when offered a new job?? I have an interview tomorrow and want to make sure all of my bases are covered. By the way, what do ya'll think about Phoenix?

Short list:
Money and how much more of it.
Holiday and vacation per year.
Cost of living in the new location.
Taxes in the new location.
Retirement/401k.
Health insurance.
Chance of promotion.
Will I like what I am doing compared to the new job.
Job security.

I know that there are many more things to consider, fill me in on some things that I might be missing.

Joe

Phoenix? (Hot... Damn hot...)

Money and how much more of it. (Definite point of consideration- but, sometimes a pay cut- to get into something you really love; could be worth it in the long run *peace of mind*)

Holiday and vacation per year. (I'd hate to start over; but if I was getting a 30 - 50% salary increase- I could suck it up, where vacation/time-off is concerned... That's what calling in sick is for! j/k

Cost of living in the new location. (Yep; a $100,000.00/year salary may be good money where you live today; but if you relocate to Irvine, CA (As was the case when Verizon was courting me to take a Director's slot out there @ $125,000.00/year) I would have been "Breaking even"- if not below) what I was making here as a Manager as far as my living standard... Plus, I couldn't have afforded a house near work in Irvine- according to stats found at http://www.homefair.com

Taxes in the new location: Some things are more difficult to research than others~ (Property taxes, for instance)

Retirement/401k. (Matching programs are a good thing- I'm just mad I waited so late to start...)

Health insurance. (Nuff said, but its getting more expensive everywhere...)

Chance of promotion. (.....................)

Will I like what I am doing compared to the new job. (.................)

Job security. (Fairy tale~ there is no such animal...)

With regard to the last item on your list . . . there is no such thing.

And if you believe there is - and let's say for the sake of argument that there is - then you would have less of it in the new place than you would in your current situation.

Let's review:

"I work for a good company, have a good job working where I grew up."

Dude . . . you can't beat that. These are intangibles (well . . . the good company thing sort of isn't, but it depends on why it's a good company . . . regardless) . . . that should not be underestimated / valued.

"You could say I have it made, except that there is a reorg in work and it has me nervous. Not lose my job nervous, but I have a feeling that I may not like the new management."

And what makes you think this won't be the case anywhere else? No matter how nice any other place will present themselves to be in an interview . . . for all you know the management is full of a$$hole$ (you're never going to find that out until you actually start working there).
On the other side is . . . maybe the new management in the reorg in your new place will be cool? Who knows? As you said, you MAY not like them . . . but then again, you may like them.

If you're not "lose your job" nervous . . . then what are you nervous about . . . that you may not like the new mgt. team? What's that about? Is it a reason to run? And what would you be running to? You'd be running from one uncertainty to another . . . what's the point of that?

"I have been told by several influential people that I have nothing to worry about..."

Then don't . . . Just keep in mind, not worrying doesn't mean being blind. Don't panic and jump ship. Stick around, get a feel for what is really going on (not rumors and fear of the unknown). If it turns ugly, then leave.

"By the way, what do ya'll think about Phoenix?"

It's great if you like 137 degree summers . . . lots of brown . . . not being able to go outside 7 months of the year, and a sprawling growth rate. Personally, I think it's a toliet, but that's just me. Then again, I think Los Angeles sucks anymore and I'm still living here, so what do I know.
