Talking Moto Nirvana Experienced...

I just returned from my vacation to the Blue Ridge Mountains in NC. Anyone who has the means and a motorcycle or sports car needs to experience this area for themselves. We stayed at a little B&B in the town of Arden, just south of Asheville. I like the area except for Asheville itself. I don't know why but 3/4 of the people we saw were either hippies or gay/lesbians. I'm talking the full on pot smoking, dread locks, no showering kind of hippies and the 300lb butch type lesbians. I have absolutely no explanation why Asheville is a haven for these people, but it was VERY annoying to sit in a restaurant with my wife with two stank as$ hippies at the next table.

Anyway...

The Blue Ridge Parkway is scenic slendor at its finest.

The Dragon, US RT 129 @ Deals Gap, NC, is the most extreme road I've ever ridden on.

The Cherohala Skyway is now my current favorite road to ride on. In 60 Miles, we saw exactly 3 vehicles. All 3 were bikes going in the opposite direction. While the BRPW has better scenery, I liked the riding on the CS better.

You must see this area for yourself. Pics will be loaded sometime today. About the only bad thing that happened was returning to this commie sh$t hole of a state, NJ...

Did you ride your bike down or trailer it? I want to ride the Dragon on my Honda Shadow one day. All the pictures I have seen of that whole region are beautiful. Looking forward to seeing yours.

My brother and some of his friends went to ride the Dragon last month. They trailered 6 bikes up there behind his FORD. yeah!

The pictures he brought back looked awsome.

about 1000 years ago a friend and myself rode our bikes from new jersey down to georgia. we cut across to athens, then up the blue ridge highway and ended up working our way back home.

i had a 1985 kawasaki gpz550 at the time.

i remember getting chased back off of the chesapeak (pardon the spelling) bay bridge tunnel due to high winds (and it was raining like a mother).

i remember spending one night in a tent in a little strip malls parking lot somewhere which they were using to sell flowers out of during the day. we put our sleeping bags on the tables and slept while we could, then moved on.

also remember getting escorted out of a small town in georgia by a local police officer. my friend and i had stopped to b.s. and he pulled up to us, rolled down his window and in a real nice drawl started the conversation with 'you boys must be lost'. i 'yes sirred' him to death, and he showed us how to leave.

even though it rained about every day of our trip, it was a great experience, and i have never looked back on it with regret.

edited to add: dont question my math. pretty sure it was about 1000 years ago, or at least it feels that way. and yes i was riding a 1985 bike. i crunched the numbers using the new math they are teaching my son in school, and they seem to be correct.

Pics are now up in my gallery. I would be happy to send anyone more pics if interested. We trailered down since my wife wasn't interested in riding nearly 800 miles... Twice...

My mom and dad live in Arden. I have to agree about the comments on Asheville. When I was in high school in Asheville, my friends and I couldn't stand going to downtown. It seemed like there were tons of panhandlers/hippies/gays/lesbians. And this was back in 1996-97. I went downtown recently and it was as you described. I think the whole "street person" problem began with the mayor Leni Sitnick. She was a lesbian herself, and really made it known during her campaign/term in office. Downtown Asheville has to be one of the most liberal cities I've ever been in. It sickens me hearing all the damned government bashing they do. But enough of that.

I hope you weren't one of the moto-types that decides that a double yellow is an invitation to pass. My wife and I frequent US 129 on the way to her parents' place in Bryson City, NC. It never fails on a trip over that some overzealous rider decides that my going 5-10 mph over the limit is not enough, and take it upon themselves to pass, usually either right before or after a curve. Other times, when I pull over to let them by, I get "thanked" by being given the finger. I realize the road is fun and all, but it seems to me that some riders forget, while in the midst of their "hot lap", that the road is still used by normal travellers.

Sorry for the rant.
