Alternative Fuel?

There is a guy at my work who has a 1985 Chevy truck with a diesel. He's been running a mixture of diesel and vegetable oil. He acquires the oil for free from a local pizza joint that his son works at. It saves him some bucks on fuel and the truck runs fine on it. He filters the used veg. oil and dumps it in the tank.

Question is, does anyone have any ideas of what to use for a gasoline engine? This has got my attention. There has got to be something cheap out there that I can run my vehicle on. What if I cooked up some moonshine and mixed that with the gas, do you think that would work?

I have a 100+ mile round trip commute to work with my '94 Tempo, so being a little crappy car, i'm willing to experiment.....

Any ideas??

I saw something a while back that chevy truck will run on "alternative" fuel. It's basically a 85% ethenol 15% gasoline mix. Veg oil is only good for diesels.

Yup, E85. F-150s are made to handle E10. I think, but am not positive, that they can run E85 with a change in the computer programming.

Edited to add:

Positives, cost less than a dollar per gallon,

Down sides it take 20% more fuel to run so you lose 20% fuel mileage. Alcohol is a cleaning agent some plastic componets of our fuel systems may not last as long.

They cover more of teh positives and negatives in various places on that site!

Thanks for the replies. I was interested in making my own fuel because I have about 30 acres of corn next to my house that the farmer only plants for tax purposes and then plows it under. He said I could use as much as I want. The supply cost would be extremely low to me since I have the main ingredient right next door to me! I also have an extremely low cost electric service where I am, so if I could buy an electric still, i'll be all set. I was browsing the internet and came up with this:

I wonder if this is for real? If so, I want to try it!

Er, just make Moonshine from the corn, sell the Moonshine and invest the profits in gas.

Oh yeah, get a Daisy Duke lookalike assistant too

That is sweet...

I am building one of the $20 wood burning stills from the plans on the site I gave earlier. It's suppose to produce 1/2 gal an hour. If ran 24 hours a day then is only 12 gallons a day. BUT I dont use 12 gallons a day normally. But then I cant run it 24 hours a day if I wanted to. I would have to pretty much be here to tend to it when ever it was running. If it works out, then I might buy an electric/propane Column Still like that, plus I would like to have a kicker keg too for get togethers. We could sit around the Still and listen to the Kicker Keg thump, while swapping stories and sippin on moonshine.
