Before Gilligan's Island, Denver starred in a show called "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis" (It was on CBS from 1959-1963)

Bob Denver's character was Maynard G. Krebs who was a beatnik who played bongo drums and hung out in the coffee shop. He was Dobie Gillis' best friend.

Maynard was kind of goofy, and dumb, and hated the idea of work. (You can just picture how much comedy ensues, right?)

Anyway, Maynard was a pretty famous character. After the show got cancelled, a year later, Denver was Gilligan, an even bigger and more famous character . . . unfortunately for Denver, so big that his career never recovered from it.

Here's the original of the sculpture where each show started and ended . . .

The Thinker . . . with Dobie sitting under the sculpture and thinking about his dilemma each week . . .

. . . and Maynard being . . . Maynard

Good times.
