One time Government payments to all NO residents

I was just talking to a friend, and he said he'd heard the government was being pressured to consider making payments to NO residents that suffered a loss, similar to the payments received by World Trade Center families. Anybody hear about this?

I really hope not because that would be one of the stupidest things ever done. People had the ability to buy insurance and if they didn’t that’s life.

I can kind of understand the 911 situation to a point. I think helping people with funeral and burial expenses and some relocation expenses since it was basically an act of war, no warning whatsoever.

I could also understand if the government helped people in N.O. with funeral and burial expenses but I pray to God they don’t give some huge lottery pay out like many families of the 911 victims received…

I may be wrong but I think the idea originated from Jesse Jackson.

Jesse the race pimp was also busy tossing around the 'racist' word this week. Somehow he figures that GWB is a racist because he allowed a hurricane to hit New Orleans.

No surprise there.
Number one in the world at making a living by supporting other people's misery, or is it just making other people miserable?

Not from Jesse, but from the President of the NAACP, I'm sad to say...

I think the New Orleans tragedy will be much worse than 9/11; but it will not set nearly the same precedence because it's a natural disaster versus a terrorist act. Many of those folks (9/11) got screwed by the insurance agencies too because they considered it an "act of war" even thought it was not because it wasn't commited by a "country" against this country. They needed some help...

I'm sure the poor in New Orleans (Many of whom are below the national average for poverty, source Headline News, Sunday Sept. 4, 2005) have no flood insurance; and are for lack of a better word: "Phucked" Either by ignorance (Not knowing or being offered flood insurance) or being unable to afford it; they're "phucked"... They will require help.

It gets hazier the more you look at it; but in the end, the two aren't the same...

If you lived in New Orleans, and didn't have flood insurance (Not homeowner's insurance; flood insurance- the two are NOT the same; and if you live in a 100 year flood zone, and don't have it- you too- could be screwed if it ever floods in your area) Flood insurance (Which is considerably more expensive than regular homeowner's insurance) is something you must have if you hope to collect funds from this disaster in order to rebuild. If not, then your only hope is that you get Federal money from the disaster relief fund since this is surely a "disaster area"...

Otherwise; you're a$$ out...

Chances of the US Gov't paying every resident of New Orleans that was displaced by the storm...

0.00000001%

If that is done, I will lose all respect for our government. There's a big difference between loss of life and loss of possessions. As 01 XLT said, you have the option (and sometimes not even that) to insure. Now, granted the Socio-Economic Status of 40% of New Orleans can't even afford a car, but if we help monetarily, they better make sure that the money is being used to rebuild what was lost, not foolishly wasted.

Either way I think that a one-time government subsidy is a tragic mistake. Not only will there be thousands of "new" residents that will try to cheat the system and try to get an unfair piece of the pie, there will also be those who will complain that this wasn't even enough. Bottom line: help these people through their time of greatest need, clear the streets of NO until they are passable again, and move on.
