Kentucky night sky
Cool pics man! We've been having some great weather finally. lol. The stars caught my eye last night. Haven't seen so many in quite a while. Nice time to take a few pics.
Btw, I'm from Harrogate, TN. Hello neighbor!

Nice pics. Wish I could get pics as good as that. Unfortunately, even though I am away from the city, I still get light from Frederick, Baltimore, and Washington DC. I am sure I get a better view that from those areas, but their lights still interfere.
If those pix were taken "last night" (now a couple of nights ago . . . that "star" you have a pic of is the planet Mars . . .
which is at the closest it's ever been to Earth since 57,616 B.C. (about 35 million miles away).
It will remain prominant in the sky till the end of Sept.
It won't be this close again for about 300 years.
Cool.

I grew up just east of there in Richlands, VA. I haven't seen stars out, like I did when I was a kid, since I left home. Not even in the desert.

Nope, it's not mars. Your info about this years mars opposition is incorrect as well. The opposition you are talking about happened over two years ago. Looking west at sunset, those two bright objects are venus and jupiter paired closely together. The brighter is venus, around mag -4, the dimmer is jupiter at magnitude -1.7 or so.
Mars wasn't even visible at the time this picture was taken.

My bad.
Next time I research something, I might want to double check it. The date said '05 . . . .
After I re-researched it . . . sure enough, 2003.
Totally embarassed right now . . .
Excuse me as I go to smash my head against a wall.
Carry on.
