going rate on a Root Canal?

Anybody know what the going rate on a Root Canal is? Think I'm going to need one; dentist told me when he worked on this one last year it had a 50/50 chance of problems in the future. I know what percent my insurance will pay, but just trying to figure out how much it's gonna set me back in the end...

I just had one done a month ago. It totalled about $1700 by the time everything was all finished, including the new crown. Although my dentist did the root canal himself in his office. Some dentists can't do them and send you out to an orthodontist.

It will depend a lot on where you are and what the going rate is.

Be happy you have insurance, I don't and had a root canal last year. I needed a crown and needed root canal (due to additional problems) prior to placing the crown on.

The RC was about $1800.oo, but that's here . . . my guess is it would probably be less where you are. Even if I had insurance, it wouldn't cover much of that as they pay a percentage of "acceptable and customary charges" which are usually so low as to be a joke.

But, the cost is nothing compared to the fun you will experience. Mine was done in two stages (so twice the fun!!!!). I'd prefer not to go thru it again.

Good luck.

INBRED..think long and hard before you do it. I had to have it done. So off to the specialist (yeh right) I went. Had the $800 root canal done. a month later its hurtin like a biotch, back I go ( to the specialist) and he does it a second time. Luckily I told him he didnt do it right the first time so I wasnt paying for it this time. That was a while ago. That tooth just cracked in half and I had to have half of it pulled by my dentist and the other hafl I have to go to an oral surgeon to get removed. $60 for the first half and who knows how much the oral is gonna cost me. Then I have to get it capped or crowned or whatever it is they do. Hell, maybe Ill just put a chicklet in there. Its way in the back so you cant see it anyway. So long story short, It cost me $800 and I got a bargain..he did it twice.

BREW

EDIT: Oh yeh, the best part was when he was drilling and it wasnt numb enough, so after I came down off the ceiling, he put his knee on my chest and said hold on. Stuck the damb needle right in the middle of the tooth and pushed as hard as he could. It was ABSOLUTELY the worst pain I have ever felt for about 4 seconds, then it went numb.

Good luck

See, perfect example . . . his price included the crown . . . the price I mentioned above did not. My dentist sent me out to have the RC done.

As Zap said . . . a memory you'll treasure forever.

Smile!

I had 4 of the sum bitches done.

Insurance picked up the tab except for around 400.00. The total bill was well over 4000.00.

I'm with Brew on this one... If it's in the back pull it if it's in the front then think about it.
I had one in the back that needed it. I asked the dentist if he was sure it was that bad and nothing else could be done? He confirmed and started to leave to go make an appointment for me at the surgeon. Then I said pull it! He stopped in his tracks looked at me like, ! I said if it's that bad, I know the percentage of success, I don't have time to waste, so pull it and I'll get an implant later. He tried to pull it but roots were wraped around the jaw. So he sent me to an oral surgeon anyway and the SOB pulled the wrong one. He got the one next to it! They put me out so I didn't know until it wouldn't quit bleeding. So my wife took me to my dentist where he immediatly realized it. So back to the oral surgeon I went. I didn't pay for that one and he is paying for one of the implants when I get them. I will need 2 in the front in the next few years so I will do all 4 of them at once then.

Side note: Insurance of any kind is like a hospital gown....

You only think your covered!

My dentist is great. He's done 2-3 root canals on me over the years and I've never once had any pain while in his chair. The worst pain by far has always been the 2-3 days before I get in to see him. Once he had some extensive grinding/ filling to do on a couple teeth way in the back, and my jaw was sore the next day. But the root canals have all been smooth and painless.

And if a dentist ever had to put his knee on my chest to hold me down, I'm afraid his jaw would be hurting more than mine the next day.

Oh, and leaving the gap from a missing tooth will screw up your entire mouth alignment for life. When I got the root canal, he also ground down the tooth and put in a temporary crown to hold me over until the permanent crown was ready. He said that leaving the tooth out for even a couple weeks will result in the other teeth shifting and moving together to close the gap. This creates gaps elsewhere and gives you the classic 'West Virginia smile'.

YEAY! ROOT CANALS!

I had one done 1.5 years ago, Sumbich quack dentist didn't know what the F he was doing. He didn't get it the first time so I had to go in a second time to have it bored out again. Crappy thing was he pumped me up with so much local anesthetic(sp?) that I started to react to it. I pretty much had the second "boring out" done with it only half dead. Bout pulled the arms off the chair. Then spent a week taking 2 vicodin and 4 ibuprofen every 6 hours.

Now a year later the crown he put on disentrigrated and my insurace won't cover a new one for 5 years.

Moral of the story, don't go to the cheapest guy around. Try to find somebody that has a clue, even if it means paying a little higher percentage out of pocket.

if it is a back tooth, pull it, will hurt like a sona of a bitch, and deapanding if it is upper moler, your dentist might have to cut your gum, also your nasel cavity could pose problems....I just had a tooth pulled..absessed realy bad, so it had to come out, the 3000.00 for the bridge ( insurance would only pay 50% ) is not going to happen, if a root canel is done, it could come back to haunt you depending on the decay rate of your tooth.

If it's a front tooth, hope to find a women that can love you for who you are..or get a bridge.

The dentest had a bitch of a time cuting the four roots of my tooth casue they were curved more than normal, so I conculed my teeth should stay put...Also on ocassion I tend to get into fight's, busting up three grand of dental work would hurt.

and I'm 2 tired to care abought me dab spelling...

Just got mine done a few weeks ago, and let me tell you I am glad for dental insurance. It happened to be one of the worse ones that the dentist had. My whole left front of my face was swolen and I was working offshore at the time and I called my office to get me some one to replace me and they didn't want to. Needless to say the company man that was in charge of the rig said we are going to go and send you in. I was so happy, I was popping pain relievers like it was candy and it wasn't helping at all. Get it done as soon as possible. Good luck.
