newbie here..
hey guys, finally purchased a truck about a month ago, i told myself i'd leave it alone as a daily driver, but the mod bug hit, so i had to join up and start asking questions.
the truck is a 1987 F150 4x2 with the 302, C6, long bed, and rust and ding appearance package. It's basically a work truck. the speedometer/odometer stopped working around 216k miles, so who knows how many miles it has. it still runs though.
all of my experience w/ fords comes from mustangs, mainly the modular ones. the main purpose of the truck is back up and tow mobile if the stang breaks at the track (i fully plan on the tr3650 tranny to let go soon).
I just got done doing some of the maintenance on it, spark plugs, air filter, and still got a fuel filter to put in and prolly a drain/refill of the cooling system.
Now, being that i have a modular mustang for which cams cost a buttload, and this thing only has one cam and they're usually pretty cheap, i've been wondering what cam options would i have that'd give it a bit more pep? any other relatively cheap mods that'll wake up the 5 liter ? as it sits, right now it can only spin the tires in a corner, in a straight line it's hopeless
or would i be better off to swap a 351w in there? how hard is the swap? I need it reliable - which so far it has been - and able to tow the stang (3200lbs + trailer) with ease.
another question i had, are the 8.8s in these trucks 28 spline or 31? any ideas what gears they came with also?
thanks in advance... i see some of you guys have some crazy nice trucks!

welcome to the boards
hang on now
circus starts at 8 so dont be late
beware of the many clowns running around here
but its a fun place nonetheless
as far as a 302 with 250+k on it....
i'd put a windsor in it
should go right in
that is what i would do
any replys from the peanut gallery?

Welcome to the boards!! It all depends on the amount of money you want to spend. There are some nice crate engines out there that you need to look at. If that motor has 250K it IS time to go, like Zap said. Fuel Injected right? If you put in a windsor you'd have to have a different intake manifold, and you'd want to look at somebody to tune that baby to go with it, which you'll probably want anyway. You can make some good power with the little 302. As for camshaft, some of the Ford Racing ones are good, like an E303 or F303. Comp cams will always tell you what you need if you just give them an idea of what your trying to do and what you have. There should be an axle code on the door jam that, with some research, you could find out what gear ratio it came with. If you get a tranny with o/d, 4.10's would wake it up. If you keep the C6 you might wanna stay with 3.73's. Again 302's can make some mad power with the right setup!
