Looking for hints on 98 Camry ABS Problems

I know this isn't about an F150 . . . you guys are great . . . you have demonstrated technical know-how that leaves me in awe . . . so I turn to you, my F150 brothers, in an effort to help MY MOM

I did already checkout a Camry Forum but has nowhere near the amount of helpful info as there is here.

If some one has any knowledge about the Toyota ABS system, any help would be apreciated:

Her ABS light came on about 2 years ago and the "Stealership" that fixed it for her charged her $1000. Now 2 years later it's on again. She lives 150 miles away but is at my place for a few days. She put black electrical tape over the ABS & Trac OFF Light because it bugs her to see them. The ABS Light stays on steady but the Trac OFF light Blinks continuously. I took it for a test drive yesterday and on a gravel road, I can get all 4 wheels to lock up, so ABS is definately not working.

I suppose I'm looking for a sort of guide as to where to start looking. I tried my code reader and no codes came up. I think that the Traction Control light will blink with any problem with the ABS cause it needs the ABS to function Right?

Next: Is there a way to test the Speed sensors and where are they located.

Are the speed sensors also called ABS sensors or are they 2 different things.

Anyway, this is getting long enough as it is, so if someone can point me to a place to start, so that I can help my "MOM" out.

It's too bad, cause it is a really nice car. Only 80K on it. V6, All black with gold trim, Leather interior.

Thanks in advance oh great and wise members of the F150 Community

P.S. Thanks Kobi

Set your volt meter on A/C volts, disconnect an ABS sensor and put the probes from the meter across the sensor on the component side. Have someone spin the wheel and see if the sensor is generating any voltage. I dunno about a Toyota, but when spun by hand, Fords usually generate around .3-.5 VAC depending on how fast you spin the wheel. Look at the tone rings closely to see if any are cracked. Make sure all the tires are the same size too.

Gee, you were right Kobi

Thanks Quintin, I'll jack it up tonight and try that. Would cleaning the connections and a bit of Dielectric grease be a good idea also?

I thought you said it was your mother-in-law. You lied...I have issues with that.

Good luck with your car Momma's boy.

Wouldn't hurt. Of course, make sure you've got power and ground at the module, and make sure none of the fuses are blown. Check the resistance across the ABS sensors themselves too, make sure they aren't reading huge differences from side to side, IOW, none of them should be reading open or a zillion megaohms or anything silly like that. Hit the sensors themselves and the tone rings with a shot of brake clean, making sure there isn't any junk or dirt built up in between them. Once I get caught up here a little, I'll check and see what the airgap between the sensor and tone ring should be.

ETA: According to a friend of mine at the Toyoter store, if you've got a constant on ABS light, you may have a module gone bad. Assuming all your resistances check okay and your speed sensors check okay, that's what I'd lean towards. Inspect the harness going to the ABS module closely too, the light staying on constantly could be caused by a short to ground somewhere in that harness.

Had a 95 Camry 4 banger that developed a nasty habit of engine quitting at the worst possible times.......no power steering and no power brakes. My daughter almost had a bad accident with it due to this. Took it to dealer several times and they could not duplicate the problem

Finally fixed it....I traded it on an '05 Focus ZX4 a few days ago. Damn nice little car for the money
