Home air filter, McGyver it?

After moving into our house a month or so ago, I just now looked at the air filter. Damn that thing is dirty! Well at first I was impressed by the size of this thing, 25"x20"x4 3/8". But now I'm just frustrated because I realize that neither Home Depot, nor Lowe's, nor Walmart carry such a beast. I haven't run by the local hardware store yet though.

My question is for all you HVAC gurus out there, could I run a 1" in it's place? I haven't looked yet to see if a 1" would stay in there, but if it did could I pull it off? I can't see why not, I'd only be some losing surface area for filtration. And I don't have an allergy problem at all.

I have found a 4" at Home Depot online, I don't see the 3/8" making any difference as far as fit. But the darn thing is $30!

Could I run four 1"ers? I find it unlikely as it would be way to restrictive for airflow. But what do I know, that's why I'm here asking.

Anyway, some input would be great. I don't want to order a 4" where the original is 4 3/8" and can't return it.

Thanks!

Don't feel bad about the $30. We sell them at the hardware store I work at for $50. We do have your size though

If you were to run four 1", you would definately want to go with the fiber glass cheapo stuff.

I'm not sure why they make those like that but I'd think there would have to be a reason.

The measurements for the filter make me think it might be a Honeywell filter. You can get them online for $24 if you buy a 3 pack.

As one that suffers from allergies I can say that the high efficency furnace filters are well worth the price for the replacement media.

You might take a look inside the blower box on the furnace to see if there is a slot for a standard 1" filter. There is on mine.

I have had the same dirty *** A/C filter in mine since I moved here LAST August...

Wanna know why? Nobody carries a 15 x 25 x 1 around here. They are all 16 x 25 x 1 at Wal Mart, Target, Home Depot, Lowe's, etc..

Oh well, my lease is up this month anyhow. Not like I care.

AC filters are a PITA. Ours uses a 20.75x21.25x3/4

Foruantely you can wiggle a 20x20x1 in there and it covers the opening completely when the fan kicks in and sucks it up there. You almost have to rip it apart to get it out though (sometimes you HAVE to rip it up).

Otherwise we have to buy the custom $80 filter and clean it every 2-4 weeks.

That can cause the electric bill to increase substantially though. I forgot to change mine this last time and it got all cloged with crap. It was in there for about 3-4 months. Our electric bill was $260 last month when it's usaully $180 in the summer. There were some other factors that played into the increase, but that wouldn't have made THAT much difference.

At the point you're at I wouldn't change it either though. Just an FYI for everyone.

I Run a 5 Ton Geothermal Heatpump (Made by WaterFurnace) and the return air filter is 30" X 36" and has to be cleaned religiously every 30 days or efficiancy will suffer. It is an electrostatic filter so I just wash it with soap and hose it down with a garden hose. You may also want to look into a permanent filter that you don't have to throw away.

Just cram the closest thing to your filters size in there. That's what I do since my electronic air cleaner stopped zapping...
