Man what I wouldn't give to be an astronaut...Shuttles are cool. So big, so much power. To think it burns that big tank of fuel in like what 7-8 minutes?? Anyone know how a rocket engine works? Just a big tube that shoots fuel and compressed oxygen inside and shoots out thrust...that's just bada$$.
that was awesome...absolutely amazing.... see that pic of the main tank separating from the shuttle? first time the public has ever been able to witness the separation. sweet!
Even better, HD Net carried it live in Hi Def.
Never seen it quite that clearly, almost like being there! (except my house didn't shake from the shockwave).
This really makes me want to see a launch live. When's the next one? Looks like a trip to FLA is in the works!!! Sweet! Watch a luanch, then head a bit north and play golf at the TPC. I love Florida!

That joker was 350 miles East and 57 miles above the Cape in 7 minutes- main engines still firing.....
I knew this, but they said the main engines on the shuttle suck so much fuel from the main tank that they could drain an olympic size swimming pool in a matter of seconds.

I was there in 2002; but there were no launches....
I was at CoCo Beach at the Hilton, and on the back pier, there was clear view of the Main bldg (Where the shuttle is assembled). I'm sure we could've seen a lauch from that distance.
Also saw the Disney cruise ship anchored about 1.5 miles off shore-- I don't know WTF that was all about...
We stayed there 2 nights...

Bighersh -
I was there last summer. The Vehicle Assembly Building is HUGE . . . even from miles away it looks big.
When we were there we did the Space Center tour which is really cool.
Certainly no launches last year. Although empty, this is the pad they launch the shuttle from:
There is an exhibit where they have a Saturn V (horizontal) in stages. It is absolutely amazing to see.
Yep- that's about the perspective from which I saw it...
Those intercoastal waterways make that part of Florida truly beautiful...
I'd live there- had I the means....
I'd never been that close to the Atlantic ocean- so I was expecting blue water... It was just as gray as it could be... Gray & rough the two days we were there. (Storms threatened both days, but didn't materialize)
I hear the gulf-side of Florida is prettier.
So far, I wasn't impressed with Jacksonville, FL (Sort of run-down, especially near I-10 & I-95... The hotels were run over- as was many exterior buildings- but inside- the Florida Theater was really nice (1996). My Mom won "Mom USA" for Louisiana in 1996 due to an essay written by my then 6th grade sister- that beat the adults that wrote against her.
Orlando was way nicer than J-ville, as was CoCo Beach to a lesser extent. When I was there (May 2002) chaparoning my sister's HS Sr. trip- they were rebuilding all the decks (New wood); but it was nice... You could tell that everything there had been walked on our touched before...
Had I have had my own car though- I'd have been at the cape; getting up close & personal with those displays, and all that other touristy stuff...
Then again- I've been right to Houston- and never went to the Johnson Space Center to see that Saturn V rocket.
