60 inch screen, 52 inch stairway...help!

I'll try to make a long story short. A guy I know, introduced me to a guy he knows. The second guy was in a bind. He had to vacate a house he was renting by close of day, and had to sell a 60 inch rear projection Hitachi TV. The set was 18 months old, and had a Zenith surround sound with DVD and VHS player included. I offered him 350.00 and he took it with the stipulation that I moved it right then. (The guy ended up deserting his wife, using the 350 as travel money.) He helped me load it on my trailer, and off I went to the house. The only place for the TV is upstairs in the bonus room. The stairway has a 90 degree turn about 1/4 of the way up. I have consulted professional movers. They came out, measured and they told me it won't fit up the stairs. My wife says the set has to go if it won't go up the stairs. Now for my questions....

The mover suggested getting a TV repairman to take the set apart and re-assemble it upstairs. Since this board is full of people that either work in the industry, or mess with audio/video stuff as a hobby, is this realistically possible? It appears to be a plywood cabinet, painted black. Will I screw up the alignment trying to take it apart myself? I don't mind trying it, I just don't want to ruin it and lose whatever money I might get out of it. I will probably be forced to sell it if I can't get it upstairs.

Of course as you married guys know, the real problem is the constant muttering and head shaking of my wife everytime she goes by the set sitting in the corner of the living room. I can only pickout a few of the words..... dumbazz, peabrained, great thinker... etc, etc.

Will it fit in the window? If so, get a fork truck, lift, even a roofer's scissors dump truck (can lift the entire bed straight up for lifting materials to the roof) and lift the TV up to the window and shove it in. Years ago a buddy of mine rented a crane to lift rolls of carpet up into motel rooms on the third floor.
If you were closer I'd come over with my bucket truck and shove it in the window for you.

Window ain't big enough, movers already thought of that and we did the measurements. My brother, who is a contractor, even thought of taking the window out and replacing it afterwards. Still not a big enough hole. I guess we could start removing brick, but for the cost of the repairs I could probably just buy a new flat panel. But, keep thinking, I hate to sell it.

I use too work at a tv repair shop when i was going to school for my Assocates degree in electronics and I left that job about a year ago so I can tell you that it is possable to get the TV apart and move it that way it depends on the modle if it comes apart to move it that way but if it is a modle that doesn't you still have some options to get it up there by taking the sceeen off give you a couple extra inches to clear 90 turns one way to tell if it comes apart is if on the side of the tv there are some sall caps that cover screw holes there should be about 4 on each side if you have that on your tv it will come apart

I'd say get a professional mover in before you smash your TV or yourself. Let them figure it out.

If things don't work out, you could probably double your money easily by reselling it.

Quinton,

The professional movers have already been here and said it won't fit. They came highly recommended. They are large furniture specialist, pianos, TV's, Refrigerators, etc. He's the one that suggested if I really wanted it upstairs, the only way was taking it apart.

O.W. I already have several offers from friends. After they finish laughing, they offer me what I paid for it to "take it off my hands" just to keep peace in the family.

I got 500 with your name on it, you just got to put it back on that trailer and bring it a few hours south.

He'd probably be better off selling it to one of his friends if you figure in gas prices on the drive to your house

I've had a big screen apart and from one ameture to another, I say don't do it yourself. I can ussually figure out electronics, but it took me 2 months to get the thing back together and it never did work right after that. But atleast it did work and that was more than it did before. Plus mine did not have teh built in surround sound or a DVD player. From now on I'll buy a brand new one before I use my time to take one apart again.

JMO... I'd rather have someone take the window out and remove some bricks myself.

Could you rotate it 90°? If you have the side of the tv down and the top or the tv going up the stairs it might fit. My 52" Hitachi is only 48.5 wide so the height of the tv shoud not be a problem. Get a couple of friends and a case of beer. Tell the friends, "No beer until the tv gets up those stairs, undamaged." Or, you could get rid of the objecting wife and keep the tv in the living room where it belongs.

I'm sure you thought of this, but can you stand it on end and make it go that way?

Make a box out of cardboard the same size and try some different methods.

The problem might be solved and I might get to keep the set and get it upstairs. I just talked to a buddy of mine that is a video game tech. He said the company he works for also services big screens for home theatres and such. He works at the bench next to the big screen repair tech. They are going to talk tomorrow at work and see if we can get this thing stripped down and up the stairs.

fingers crossed until tomorrow! (well, I might uncross them for a few beers tonight.)

Thanks guys, I'll let you all know what happens. Maybe even provide a few pictures.
