Have you ever driven on 195 between Kileen and I35 toward Austin. A dangerous road where many people get killed every year. The Army banned military personnel from driving on it.

My step-mom always says "leave it to the engineer to figure it out" whenever I fix something. Like they taught a class in college on how to hook up a computer or electronics.

Looks like they are replacing that crappy intersection with a larger round-about...so believe it or not...it will be an improvement...

Looks like it is in the middle of construction. You should try designing a TCP (Traffic Control Plan) some time. You have to build you new road, ramp, interchange, etc. without disturbing the existing traffic as much as possible.

As stated before, it looks like the existing round-about was way too small and they are replacing it with a larger one. You see both becasue the outer one is still under construction and they have not removed the inner one yet.

Perfect example of the benefits of a round-about design...just make sure you don't get stuck in the inside lane if you are in a hurry though...

Ahhhh...the perfect exampe of a MCF (major cluster *******). They are a rare breed but show themselves at rush hour when you are trying to go home.

I personally do not really care for round-abouts but I have designed a couple of small ones. Nothings beats a good old signalized intersection. They work a lot better overseas, where people are more used to them. People just are not used to them here and do not know what to do, which causes delays.

Why is it that Americans are so opposed to change? Same thing as with the metric system...

Amen! I love the metric system, if I can keep my equivalents straight. When I interned with Kansas DOT a few years ago, they had converted to the metric system and had been using it for a couple years. Now I hear that they are switching back over to english. The contractors just didn't pick it up and it became a hassle for the KDOT inspectors.

When I worked with the Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) during college (~2001-2003) they were in the process of converting to the metric system. Most of my civil engineering work is with the City of Houston, City of Pasadena, Harris County Toll Road Authority, and Uptown Development Autority, which all use the english system. I too, love my job. A few months ago we had a beer brewing party here at our office, where the best brew won a prize. We host about 3 golf scramble tournaments a year, and have monthly birthday happyhour celebrations.
