Lawn freaks... need advice on edgers

I've been looking at those power edgers (edgers that look like a weed wacker) to replace a Boleans walk behind edger that I currently have.

I've never used one and am not sure how well a weed wacker type edger will work compared to my walk behind.

Anyone have any expirence with both? What are your thoughts?

BTW, I was looking at the Echo PE-200 or the 230

Id say both will do just as good of a job, but as was mentioned the "stick edgers" are easier to maneuver (sp) than the walk behinds, so the job would go quicker.
Although, it doesnt need to be all that maneuverable (sp?) if your lawn is a big square

I've had an Echo (model 30, I think) for a couple years now and I have been very happy with it. I highly recommend it.

Develop your skills with your weed eater. I use my weed eater to edge. They are pretty much all purpose. The edgers are good but you can not get a wide gap edge with them, whereas a weed eater you can edge as wide as you want. Depends on your taste I guess.

I have one of the lock on types that attach to a regular trimmer.

Once you get it established (the edge that is), it's cake to maintain. I'm MORE than pleased with my investment in the cheaper system... Home Depot... I think it was $75ish.

RockPick, that's the same one I have and LOVE IT! I've got the weedeater & edger attachments. And there's more you can buy to, like a small tiller and some others. Home Depot!!!

The Echo is a solid, dependable unit that should give you many years of service without a hiccup.

I agree with the weed-eater comment. I have yet to see a driveway or path that I could not clean up with just a weed-eater. Just keep the line fed and you will be fine.

I prefer my Walk behind edger. I have a lot of edging to do, and I can have it done by the time I get my weed wacker converted. Two pulls, zip, zip, and it is done. Much straighter on consistent than I can do with the weed whacker, also. One other thing, I have lots of trees on one acre, so I already have so much weed whacking that it strains my back. When my edger gives out, I will be buying another one pronto.

I can understand Moderators doing their own lawncare becuase they are only being paid the minimum wage but, it concerns me to learn that the webmaster is doing his own lawncare too.

What kind of a cheap, fly by night website is this?

Thanks for the replys everyone!

I've tried using the weed wacker to edge but got really sick of crap flying up into my face, plus I own a corner lot with about 250' of sidewalk and it's a lot faster having an edger.

I would have went with a unit that had the interchangeable edger/weed wacker fittings, however I already own a nice 2 y/o Echo weed wacker and do not plan on replacing it.

I went out this weekend and got a new blade for the edger... holy crap did it make a difference. Instead of only having 2 cutting edges, this one has 4. Still, the edger is getting old and will need to be replaced within a couple yrs.

Heres what I do...
I have 10 acres
I maintain 4 of those
I have 250 yards of road frontage ditch line that is a 6' incline almost straight up and down to weed eat (thanks to the county), numerous trees, flower beds, and other misc items, 125 +/- yards of drive way, 300' +/- around the house, un counted lengths of fence lines and cross fences. I edge the flower beds, drive way and path ways to the various gardens with just the string. For all of this I use a Homelite Trimmer from Walmart ($60 special). I ussually use it 2 years sometimes 3 (at 2 years it's $30 per year invested). I dont even change the spark plug, soon as it takes more than 10 pulls to start it... I buy a new one and sell the old one for $20. That takes my investment down to $40 so only $20 per year at 2 years, plus gas and string.
