More like 150.
There was a case here recently.
A 26 year old female died of Creutzfeld Jakob.
She was probably infected by eating bad meat 10 years ago.
Symptons of CJ usually begin at age 30, I have read somewhere.

Mad cow in Europe was not covered up.

And its not being covered up in the USA, either. The reason you don't hear much about it over here is our food supply is safe.

Whenever you hear about a cow in North America with mad cow, the news reports almost never say whether it was a dairy cow. An old dairy cow is never going to make its way onto your dinner plate.

One of the big mad cow scares we had a year or two ago was because some Canadian dairy cow that made its way into the USA tested positive. Big media hoopla (opposite of a coverup). Had NOTHING to do with the safety of USA beef.

Big hoopla because they found a way to blame someone else. We are not hereing much about this one. With at least 100 times the cattle in the U S over Canada, you really think this was the first case?

The US beef industry has a huge financial incentive to protect the food supply. They are businessmen, not idiots.

They have learned from Europe's problems and are carefully avoiding feed made from certain animal products.

That's the real story, but it does not sell many newspapers.

But let some indiscrete dairy with less-than careful feeding practices find a sick cow, and all hell breaks loose. National headlines. Even though the cow was never going to be eaten by humans.

The media is playing on your fears, people. Continue to eat American beef with confidince.

They also dont tell you that humans cant be affected by Mad Cow Disease if they eat an infected cows meat. You can eat the steak all you want and nothing will happen to you. The only way it can affect humans is if you eat the infected cows brain, or other similar types of tissue. I dont know the different eating habits of people around the world, but in the US normal people dont eat those parts of the cow.

Er, unless you eat burgers or sausages

Usually made from "mechanically recovered meat" which is all the crap steam cleaned of the carcass including brain, spinal cord and everything else.

Mind you, that's why it's so tasty

The disease (Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease - vCJD) is spread through the consumption of nervous system tissue that contains a "prion" or proteinaceous infected particle.

There are similar diseases "Brain Wasting diseases" that are present in goats, sheep and deer (scrapie etc.)

USDA has rules specifying that nervous system tissue (brain, spinal cord etc) MUST be excluded from ground beef, sausage etc.

There is more info here CDC BSE and here USDA BSE if you are interested in the subject.

Why do they call it PMS? Because Mad Cow Disease was taken. - unknown, presumably deceased...

they also have a huge incentive to cover it up as they know what happened to the beef industry in other countries when BSE was uncovered.

I don't believe for a second that they haven't covered up BSE
