A new critter in the yard???
Well, yesterday I was sitting here at the computer searching through the f-150 on line website and the wife was in the yard watering her plants. All was peaceful in the world until I heard "GET OUT HERE...GET OUT HERE NOW! HURRY!!!" I thought what now.....mud on her shoes, ants on the hose, she needs the water turned off, or what? So I casually get up and go out in the back yard and she says "Look over there" So I look......I looked again......I said to myself...."Self, can that be what you think it is?" Well, it was. A snake! Sunning itself on the concrete next to the gate. It then slithered away under the gate into the front side yard. I ran into the house and grabbed an old pool cue (a Looonnnnng stick) and ran through the front door into the front side yard. I saw it go into the ground cover as I tried to move the ground cover away to try and snag it to fling it onto the front lawn. No luck. I lost it in the ground cover. Damn.......
Now, I searched all over numerous websites to try and see if there were pics of the same snake that decided to pay us a visit, but no joy.
maybe one of you guys can identify it.
It was white with black bands all along it's length. It was maybe 3-4 feet long, about 3/4" dia.
Yeah, I know it's a small snake, but if you would have heard my wife, you would have thought she stumbled across a diamondback rattlesnake.
Does anybody have a clue as to what kind of snake this might be? A friend at work said it might be a King snake, but I haven't got a clue.
Can any of you guys offer any help to identify this snake?
Thanks.

The only poisonous snakes we have here are rattlesnakes. I called animal control and they said that it isn't dangerous and is probably a protected species, but he didn't have his snake identification book handy.
If it was a rattlesnake, we'd have dinner!!!
I just wish I knew what that damn thing was........

Stripes white/black sounds like a garter snake of some type or another:
Only snakes I really have to worry about in Gawga at the moment are chicken snakes...dunno if that's what they're really called, but I blew up a perfectly good birdhouse with some double ought buck 'cause the fat bastard climbed up in there after eating 11 baby chickens.

This is weird.
It's close to that pic, but it was the whitest white and the black bands were like they were painted on. Straight. Circled around the diameter of the snake perfectly. Like you would draw a picture. Maybe it was a young one that has yet to mature to have the black bands become uneven?
The bands were maybe 1/2"-3/4" wide spaced about an inch to an inch and a half apart.

The coloring of snakes can vary greatly depending on age and environment. Hell, sounds like that king snake might be a cool cat to have around, since he's badass enough to eat poisonous snakes. I was just reading at Oplin.org that the king snake is immune to the venom of cobras and rattlesnakes.

I came home from work one Saturday afternoon, and the chickens were scared to death of something, they were clattering and hooping and hollering all the way at the far corner of the yard. I do a quick count and notice a lot of baby chicks are missing. Okay, shotgun time. Shotgun in one hand, axe handle in the other, turning over their nests looking for the offender who's nowhere in sight. Dammit. I turn out to walk out the chicken yard and see the pole that the birdhouse is on swaying back and forth pretty serious. The wire fencing for the yard is right next to that post/birdhouse, put two and two together, lock and load and BOOM! Guts and lumber flying all over the place.
Still haven't lived that one down.
It was a nice birdhouse too.
Was it similar to this snake:
