It has to be some sort of algorithm...do the symbols change each time you do it? I didn't look...

If so, then the symbols should change into a predictable pattern based on whatever algorithm the programmer used.

I knew I should have paid more attention in math class...

EDIT: Yep, the symbols change...just an algorithm! I have to admit it had me going for a minute!

 

I see... if you do the same number twice then the symbol next to that number changes and every other number with that symbol is also a multiple of 9. You always end on a mutlple of 9 no matter what number you choose to start with. Who ever decided to use that formula for this rocks! Had me going for a little bit too... Wasn't ready to say phsycic or witch craft or anything yet, but I just couldn't figure out the pattern.

 

Not only is it an algorithm, but there is an old method of checking answers based on a principle called 'casting out 9's'.
