Should I buy it?
OK - New here. I hope these types of posts are not frowned upon. If so, I'm sorry in advance.
OK - I may soon be the proud new owner of an F-150.
Carfax, KBB check out OK. Drives nice.
Here are the details...
2002 F-150 FX4 4WD Supercab 50K miles
Red
No sense in listing options, ya'll probably have a good idea since its probably all stock for his trim level.
Bedliner, step rails, power this and that
It has a small dent in rear fender that will be fixed by dealer.
Asking $16,900. Paying 16,900 less my ford contour which he is offering $1,700 (Not really worth that but thats the games dealers play).
Is this a good deal for a clean truck?
Red, hmmm, not too sure about red. I never had a red anything before. Comments on color?
Is there anything particular about this year/model I should be aware of or check out before doing the deal?
Thanks
I look forward to getting to know ya'll if I get this baby.

The Contour is a 1995 GL 5speed with 112K miles. Its on its last legs. Basicly he is probably discounting the price of the truck by $1500 and giving me $200 for the contour. Ya think I would still be paying too much??
I drive the same model contour with about the same miles. We paid $1k for it from a friend. I saw one selling on a local forum for $750 the other day. I hate trade in's because you dont know what you're getting but you're always getting screwed.
I looked up similar trucks on autotrader.com
Locally a truck like that goes for 20k+

Try Kelley Blue Book to see for yourself if this in the ballpark. Couple KBB with local market prices and you can get a pretty good idea if the dealer is being fair with you. Also in some states there is no sales tax when buying from a private party but there, of course, is when buying from a dealer. To me this is something to strongly consider when buying a used vehicle.

Well, to be completely honest....I bought mine with 2.5 miles on it and it was that price.
Of course its an XL, with no power locks or winders, 4.2L V6, but hey, I like it.
I think that price is a lil steep for an '02. IMO

KBB retail is 18280 and private party is 15870. Price is at 16990. Remember trade to consider. I guess I am trying to talk myself into it. Is it a BAD deal or just not a great deal?
Also - Part of my original question. Anything in particular that I should look for or look out for in this model (Or any f150 for that matter)

What size engine does it have; 4.2, 4.6, or 5.4? Will you use it to tow/haul or just getting out in the boonies? Is gas mileage a concern or no? Going by what you just posted in sounds like an okay deal. Not good but no bad either. You might want to look at The Truck Trader as well. Who knows, you might find a better deal from a private party. Does your state charge sales tax when buying from a private party?

Well, like NetBob brought up, it depends what your gonna use it for. Also, what kind of warrenty will it have? Are you picky as far as options? I am a simple man. I dont need all the lil extra's. As long as it has AC, cruise and a radio, hell, I'm good.
IMO 16.9 is a little bit high for used...considering I got mine new for 16.5
If you really, REALLY, REALLY, want the truck, I say - go for it.
But keep in mind, it's used, and you cant be 100% sure how that truck was treated before.
tax, technically on private I think but never in practice. No for commute. Yes for hauling stuff. Have suburban with greater towing capacity when I need it. Truck has the small V8, 4.6L. Has trailer package, wiring, etc. I need to measure the bed. I think its 6.5'. 8' would be useful for me but not a requirement. A couple of weekends per mo., in summer, I drive to cottage ~ 120 mile away. Occasional trips to airport, about 2x/mo., 16 miles.
Seems trivial but I have it in my head that I want power door locks and windows. I figure that in a full size truck it would be a major pain to reach across. Quad cab this is especialy important for me.
Problem for me in private sale is my POS Contour. I wouldn't feel right about even giving it away. It about died last PM when going to look at f150. So, I figure that the real price of the truck is $15,290 (After considering his $1700 offer for contour) Reality is Contour may only be worth a couple of hundred $$$ or whatever it would bring at a scrap yard.
FYI - A few others I looked at...
2000 F150 XL 4.6 V8 56K miles ext cab 4wd ,cap, no power windows doors $15K
2002 F150 'Ford certified' XLT 4x2 ext cab, 28K miles $16,995
2002 Dodge Crew Cab, 4x4, 25K miles, stripo model, 5 speed., near mint condition, $16K.
2000 F150 XLT 4x4 5.4 V8 78K miles, fair condition, no hitch, no bedliner. $15K
2004 F150 Heritage? 4x4 extcab 8' bed, $20K
<<way out of price range, milage unknown.

It probably has a 3 month/6k warrantee then or something similar.
I guess I'll go out on a limb here and say it sounds okay judging by the info on this thread. 4x4's always cost more and get less gas mileage. If you feel you could use the 4x4 then I'd say go for it. The 4.6L is a sound engine and if properly maintained you should get some high miles out of it. Some have gotten in excess of 400k out of them. Oh, and be sure to get 2 keys with it. The keys have a chip in them that's part of the Passive Anti Theft System (PATS) and can be a little spendy to get a second one made. Only a dealership can do this.
