Need some computer help

I don't want to make this too long, but my hobby is researching the history of military transport vehicles 1930-1950. I hang out on probably 100 BBs such as this that deal with military history in general and we share photos which I download to my "My Pictures" file.

Up until a week ago, every photo I downloaded went into that file as a jpg file, that was the default "type of file". All of a sudden the default file has changed to "bitmap" and I am offered no alternative. That it all there is in "select file type" I know nothing about the technical side of this, but bitmap files are huge and not accepted by most BBs so I have to print the photos, scan them and then in the photo editing program I have it lets me put them back into the "My Pictures" file as a jpg. image.

I run Windows XP if that helps. Can anyone tell me how to reset the default "file type" back to jpg?
Forgot to mention that I believe this took place after we had a power interruption and the computer was improperly shut down.
Any help is very welcome.
Thanks
Bill

1. Open Explorer
2. go to Tools than Folder options
3. go to the "file type" tab
4 scroll down until you the JPG file extension then click on it
5. the "change" button will highlights then you can change the application association back to whatever application you were using.
Is sounds as if you may have a few different application that can view images.

If I'm wrong than I'm sure someone else will chime in.......

Bill,

I'm confused. SEU1's advice will reset the program that opens the pictures for you from say MS Paint to Photo Editor or whatever but it doesn't change the default save type of the photo.

Files when you access them already have an extension thus a file type (JPG, BMP, GIF). Now I could see if you are opening JPGs in MSPaint and than saving them as BMPs but that is about it.

Maybe you can explain what you mean by changing the default file type.

Jim.

I had a feeling this was not going to be easy.
OK, I go to site X and I see a photo I want to download.
In almost all cases, the photo is said to be a jpeg file. I have probably 2,000 such downloads in my "My Pictire files.
Up until something went wrong, when I right clicked on the photo to be copied and hit "copy", it copied it as a jpeg file and as I recall, that was one of several file types I could choose from in the little drop down under "select file type" or whatever it said.

Now, it only offers bitmap and the drop down menu only has bitmap to choose from
The only other clue I can offer is that this also started at about the same time I started accessing a Russian WWII history site and all of their photos were in the bitmap file type. Really small photos that you had to click on to see them at all. Don't know if that helps.

Bill,

Can you provide a sample link to one of the images? It is possible that the particular site you came across provides its images in BMP format, as that is a valid format for the web browser to render.

While BMP files can be relatively large, they can be very easily converted to JPG images, because both are actually "bitmap" image types. There are a variety of freeware programs that will allow you to pick a directory and convert one file type to another with just a couple clicks. Irfanview comes to mind.

The Paint program included in XP should be able to open a BMP and save as a JPG.

Bill, odds are your jpg images are still there. Me thinks you are presented with a little window to select your file to upload... in the past 'jpg' was the default 'file type' in the box and now it's bmp and since the PC is filtering on bmp files you can't see your jpg even though they are there. Very odd. One way to see your jpg files quickly is to type *.jpg in the 'file name' box, just above the bmp file type. Hit enter. Hopefully this filters and shows you all the jpg files and you can select the one you want. Without knowing what site or program your using it's nearly impossible to tell you exactly what has changed.

For the other lurkers: Go into MS Word. Ctrl-o (Or file, open for you mouse losers). The default type is .doc and only shows your word files even though you have other files in a peticular directory. Get it? That's his issue. Now, type *.xls and hit enter you'll get all the excel files. See? Magic!

Losing the ability to save as jpg usually means that your browser cache has too many items in it, have you tried clearing your cache and deleting the files, including offline files? Also, check this http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;810978

You know, I'm an idiot. Billy boy is talking about saving, not uploading...

Bill, ignore my post. Momalelelel is on the right track. To make it easier, here is the steps from his link:

To troubleshoot and resolve this behavior, empty the contents of the Temporary Internet Files folder, and then delete the files in the Downloaded Program Files folder that are listed as either Unknown or Damaged. To do so: 1. Start Internet Explorer (if it is not already started).
2. Empty the contents of the Temporary Internet Files folder. To do so: a. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
b. Click the General tab.
c. Under Temporary Internet files, click Delete Files.
d. When you are prompted to delete all temporary Internet files, click OK.

3. In the Downloaded Program Files folder on your hard disk, remove the files that are listed as either Unknown or Damaged. To do so: a. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
b. Click the General tab.
c. Under Temporary Internet files, click Settings.
d. Click View Objects.

The list of program files that are downloaded to the SystemRoot\Downloaded Program Files folder on your hard disk appears in the Downloaded Program Files window.
e. In the Status column, note the files that are listed as either Unknown or Damaged. Remove these files. To do so, right-click the file, and then click Remove.
f. When you are prompted to confirm the removal, click Yes.
g. Close the Downloaded Program Files window, and then click OK two times.

4. Save an image in Internet Explorer to test and determine if the issue is resolved.

If the issue continues to occur after you remove all downloaded program files that are listed as Unknown or Damaged, try removing the other downloaded program files that are on the list.

Note: The next time that you need one of the files that you removed from the Downloaded Program Files folder, you will receive a prompt to download the file to your hard disk in Internet Explorer.
