yup, another gas price thread...

Are these people I'm talking to just nuts or is this a fact for the near future?......

So, I'm at work, and I bring up a conversation about gas prices saying how they seem to be going up again (at least here it is) and one of the guys tell me "Well, theres a rumer going around saying that gas will hit $2.80 here by the end of summer" so I go to the other guy and tell him what this guy just told me, and he says that it's a posibility that in 2 years from now, gas will average out at around 4.50 - $5.00 a gallon for regular gas!!

Are these guys I'm working with just talking about nothing, or are we really in for these next couple years with gas??

(makes me wonder if buying another truck soon is going to be worth it with these gas prises going up and up and up?)

i just turned 17 and the gas prices here are 2.05 - 2.40 there arnt many jobs that will hire people that are still in high school so now im stuck driving a truck that is getting 10 to 12 miles per gallon. know that i started driving trucks i dont really want to drive a car. im hoping i can get a job and buy a little 4 cylinder car or a ranger. last year the gass companys made $100,000,000,000.know if they cut prices in half the would still make 50 billion dollars.

Gas prices here have went down drastically. A month ago, it was around $2.29-2.39 in most places. Now it is around $2.09-2.15 in most areas. Of course by the airport today it was $2.49 for regular, but that is the exception. Many stores have just started leaving the last number off because it is going down almost daily now.

I do believe that gas prices will eventually rise again. I'm not sure if they will get that high or not though. I don't think we will ever see gas below $1.75 again unless a store is having a promotion or something like that.

When I started driving almost 10 years ago, gas in most places was about $1.49 or so at the most. Look where it is now, I never expected to see gas go over 2.00 a gallon.

I think the with the overall trend, gas will continue going up. I do however believe that there will be a cutoff point to where it will stop going up. More people will eventually look to other methods of powering their vehicles instead of with gas, therefore demand for gas will drop. When that happens, they will have to drop again to get rid of the surplus.

It's a $1.96ish/gal around here. A couple weeks ago, there wasn't any place in town cheaper than $2.09/gal.

Ok, here's the deal.

Gas is never going to get cheaper in the long term.
With worldwide demand rising for oil (especially China and India) and reduced refining capacity, there will always be an upward trend.
This will eventually lead to all of us either biting the bullet and having a truck etc with poor fuel economy (if you can afford it) or driving a smaller, more economical vehicle.
Of course, vehicle makers will find ways to improve economy as time moves on so it all becomes relative.
Engines today put out as much power as engines from the late 60's with twice the economy.
Also, I would expect vehicles to be made from lighter materials (composites) which will allow smaller, more economical engines with the same performance.
As for todays gas prices, if you take inflation into account, they are no higher than in the 70's.
