diesel focus
diesel focus
Has any one herd if ford will be releasing the focus with the 1.8l diesel here in the states. I read about it on another site but its in europe. It stated it gets 50 mpg.
I think I would rather go diesel than hybred. Right know the only afordable cars with diesels are from VW.
I am a ford guy.

most manufacturers are in the same boat. They all have world class diesels around the world, but won't bring them here. A combination of dirty, high suphur fuel with the highest emissions standards in the world prevent them from doing so.
So as much as we talk about a diesel Focus, that could be a diesl Explorer, Neon, Cavalier, Corolla, Civic, etc.
BTW, the Euro Focus also has way better gas engines too (I think the RS is like 180 or 200 HP)

I seriously doubt they will bring the diesel Focus here. The only reason VW does is so they can say they are the ONLY car make with a diesel passenger car in the US. Even if you are a FORD guy, buy the VW, Jetta or Golf. They are far, far, far superior vehicles on a bad day than the best Focus on a good day. The Focus simply is not in the same league.
The problem with diesels are all cost related. Used to be diesel was a good deal cheaper than gas. Now it costs about $.10 - $.20 more than premium gasoline. Now you must factor in the intial cost of stepping up to the diesel, again VW is the only car make that has an affordable diesel. In the heavy duty trucks, the cheapest diesel is a $4500 option AFTER you step up to the HD which by itself is usually about a $5000 jump from the 1/2 ton trucks. In the Jeep Liberty the diesel is almost $8000 above the base model. The VW Tuareg 4.9 TDI is almost $60000. Next you have the maintenance costs. ALL diesels cost more to maintain than a gas engine. Interval service is usually in the $300-$400 range for a diesel. I've heard in passing that a fuel filter for a Cummins TD is like $80. They use different oil and filter.
If you take all that into consideration, a diesel doesn't make sense except for the HD trucks or someone who does NOTHING OTHER than put 20000 miles on a car in a year.
Until a manufacturer, other than VW which is your ONLY choice at this time, gets serious about offering an affordable diesel in any passenger car, I don't see them taken seriously by anyone other than the Heavy Duty truck guys.
I wanted a F250 when I bought my truck but it would have been nearly $40000 instead of just over $23000 for the F150 Lariat. There was no way I would spend that much extra just for having the diesel. The rumors of the 4.5lt diesel in the F150 are nice but the retards behind the bean counter desk will charge like $6000 for it so it will be a resounding flop if you ask me.

We get clean, low-sulphur diesel in later 2006. After tha date, you'll be seeing some more diesels over here. Maybe not for states with CA emissions though, but they should be more widely available.
I will disagree with you about the Focus, KC. I think it's a great little car and drives very well IMHO, but I think it's in a lower segment than the Jetta so of course it's not as refined and offers fewer comforts. But the Focus also costs a lot less so your expectations shouldn't be so high, you know what I mean?

Say what you want, but I'll take my 'cheap' focus over an overprice VW any day.
That's cool, take the Focus. Just remember one thing... German cars notoriously HOLD their value (you priced a certified used pre-owned German car lately?) while the Focus will be worth next to nothing in less than 3 years. To each their own.
It still doesn't change the fact that the diesel Focus will probably NEVER come here. So if you want a diesel passenger car & the Focus is a better car than the Jetta (yeah, right...
) I guess you're SOL...
