Will a pellet gun kill a Nutria?

I just moved to a new house with a lake and there are Nutria everywhere. I can't use a rifle because of the neighbors on the lake, so I'm thinking about buying an air rifle to shoot them. The question is, will a pellet travelling at 1000 fps be enough to kill one of them?

For those of you who don't know what a Nutria is. It's a nasty creature that looks like a big rat.

Most likely it will just sting it a bit. Kill it, highly unlikely...

If stealth is an issue, I'd recommend archery equipment.

EDIT: Can't you trap them?

No they are too prolific and would be back in days. Maybe it would still be fun just to harass them. They have some pretty pimped out air rifles these days.

Sure. I think a pointed pellet would do the job. I've killed ground hogs with them.

It's a Daisy Power Line 880 with a scope. It holds a lot of BB's...but pellets must be inserted one at a time. Pump it up 10 times, and it's ready to go.

No problem knocking those suckers out. You just need a powerful pelet gun. The best pelet gun would be a 22cal. I have one that penetrates squirles great, pump it about ten times, wam (only about 100 bucks). But make sure you have a pointed pellet, not flat or round, and NO bb's. But if you cant get a hold of a 22cal pelet gun just get a highpowered regular size one. A one **** 1000fps spring loaded rifle will do the trick!

I'm not crazy or anything about air rifles and stuff, just had them a lot growing up. I even had a laser pointer on a CO2 pistol.

check out some spring loaded pellet rifles from RWS. the Diana models, shoot .177 caliber pellets at the same velocity of a .22 powder shell.

they make hollow and point tipped .177 pellets.

i would think it would drop soemthing that size pretty easily.

yup- a .22 cal pellet gun with a 4X scope. very quiet, and if you get a head shot, even better.

Yeah no sweat with a pellet rifle. Like said earlier, make sure you have the pointed pellets. They penetrate about an inch into 2x4s so a little ROUSS shouldnt be a prob.

i would think it depends alot on the pellet gun. i have a Benjammin .22 that i think if you hit it in the right place would do the job. this gun was was around $90 in 1979. i send it in every 6 or 7 years to be rebuilt and it has real walnut stock.

also depends on how far away you are. i dont know about the newer guns but when i was a kid this gun was easily twice as strong as the daisey and crossman "pump" guns on the market. this was 25 years ago .

like evertything else, there are probably air powered guns that will take down an elephant, if you spend enough $$$$$$
