Surfing the web all it's craked up to be?

I'm really hating my job this afternoon. It is soo boring and I think I'm getting dumber every day I work here. Sure I know a lot of current events but is surfing the web and message boards 6 hours a day all it's cracked up to be? I am the IT department at a medium sized local business. Sure I have work to do, but most of it is so boring I can either do it in 10 minutes or have no desire to do it and surf the web anyway. Although I graduated with a degree in IT, I just don’t think I have the skills to find another job. I landed this job through luck two years ago when I got out of college. I certainly can't take a pay cut because I have house payments to make. Man I don't there is anyway out of this pit. When not working my 48 hours a week, I have so much on my plate there's no time to learn additional skills. Even when there is free-time, I'm too burned out to do anything productive. I don’t know how I'm going to get my career on track. Being a 1-man IT department, I spend most my time alone in my cubical reading forums.

[/whiney rant]

Brother, I know your pain. I'm not IT, but tech support, and I am about ready to stick a gun barrel in my mouth. I cant afford to loose my job after I have about 4 years at this one.

This job has driven me to the edge of insanity. I'm like you, I have a house payment, 2 auto's, kiddo, and 2 brats (dogs). Also, that damn honey-do list doesnt have an end....

I hear ya man. But take it from me..its better to look for a job while you still have one. Dont quit without a job to go to. I was fed up with my job last spring, found another one in another state. Quit my job, packed up and moved. Hated my new job and was back in my old town in less than a month. Couldnt find what I wanted, so I took the summer off and partied. Finally got a job and after 6 months realized that wasnt for me either. Im now at my new job, going on my 3rd week. So far so good. I like it so far and hope to be here for a while. I guess my point is, dont feel like your stuck there. Find something else even if its just to get out of there and then you can look for another job later on. At least you will be happy for 2 or 3 months. Thats usually how long it takes to figure out all the BS at the new job and start hating it like it was your old job...LOL Anyway, dont give up man, if you have a degree, thats deff. worth something to somebody. Sooner or later something will come along.

And for petes sake, get out of there before you end up like jamzwayne and start kickin the crap out of everyone you see

I was/am in the same delima you are in right now. You know what though I said shame on me for feeling sorry for myself.

1. I live in the greatest country in the whole world.

2. Online college courses are everywere and you may even work some where, where they pay the tuition or at least part of it.

3. I said thats that and started school. I was scared as hell and didn't think I had the time. I work 50-75 hours a week. But once I started I freakin love it. If you've already been once the second time will be cake. Plus, work is better now because everyday I am at work is one day closer to getting my degree.

Quit your bitchin and do something. The problem with kids my age 28 is that we bitch and moan and say what we are going to do and just sit and rot. Well, I can personally say you can change your situation if you want it enough. If you don't at least quit feeling sorry for yourself. At least you have a job, house, truck, etc....

UC,

It's like you were writing a description of my day.

Reset a password, Clear the paper jam, jump off the roof...back to F150online. It gets me through the day.

Easy Tony Robbins (Thrill Racing)!

But I do agree that the only one with the power to change your situation/happyness is YOU!

Maybe a new hobby? maybe modding out a new truck? Eh?

Sorry, i get excited about this topic.

I always thought making money, regardless of what others said, was the most important thing to me. Now I know its freedom, to do what ever the hell I want to. Unfortanetly that freedom rarely accompanies any job so I'm kind of at a cross roads myself.

Good, luck urban cowboy!

I dont feel sorry for myself. Just "a case of the Mondays" added with the fact my job is boring and unchallenging.

The fact of the matter is I don't have time. Well, that is, unless I stop spending time with the important people in my life. Sure, I can free up time but that is time taken away from friends and family (the only thing keeping me sane).

I have a hobby. I love 4x4 and I'm into hobby-level RC. Well, do they count as hobbies I have no time for them?

Sometimes I feel like I get paid to surf the net. But then someone bothers me. I'm bored of the net. I hate computer jobs, especially when it's nice and sunny and warm out like today.

And to top it off, I don't get my real workload for the day until about 5pm, when everyone goes home. Oh well, I least most of the machine resources all to myself by that time.

I hate computer jobs.

Being basically a one man shop for my company's IT needs it is feast and famine. Day in and day out it can be very lame with spots of real technical challenge. I like the fact that I know I have to figure it out because there isn't another tech to lean on.

Some people with tons of repetive busy work get peeved at me because it seems like the IT staff aren't working.

I tell em we are insurance policies. You hate to use your insurance but your sure glad you have it when something bad happens.

Just got a new firewall that I'm going to be putting in so that should keep me busy for a little while.

When I was stuck in help desk for a local ISP I found this page many many many maybe even several times. need time?
I feel all of your pain. From that job I went to IT Admin for the entire company wich included 10 news paper offices in 10 towns, a radio station and the ISP for each town they were in too. Bigger Cmpany IT isn't any better! Same peddy problems just more of them.
