Question Spare Key

I just had a spare key made for my 2000 F-150. It will open the doors, but will not start the truck. The guy at the locksmith shop checked my orignal key and said it did not have a chip in it and the new key will work find. Of course I didn't have the truck with me when I got the key made. Is there a special key I need to have made? Help appreciated.

2000 f-150 / 7700
5.4L
4X4
4R100 Tranny
3.73LS Rear

I'm pretty sure the PATS system began with 99 models.

It the head of the key is about an inch x 1-1/2 in size, you have a chip.

You do have a chip in that key. I believe the only way to get a key made now is your dealer.

Yea you have a chip and it is $30 at the dealer. I just had a spare key to carry in my wallet after locking them in the back seat twice while unloading stuff and forgetting them there. So the .99 Wal-Mart key to unlock the doors works for what I needed it for.

how many keys do you have that start the truck?
If you only have 1 , then the dealer will have to programm the key.
here is a link with info on how to program the keys

I got my spare made at the local locksmith for about $7 I think (back in 2000)

The spare has the "chip" in it & the locksmith programmed it for me no problemo. I had to have both my original keys for them to program it though.

Yea as long as you have 2 keys you can program yourself, at least with the 04s. Get the keys cheap (Ebay is one place to look) and program yourself.

You just mentioned the number one reason I bought the keypad in the door. Think of how many times you don't want to carry your key with you. Hunting, swimming, boating, biking, hiking, etc. I just hide the key inside somewhere, then use the keypad to enter the truck. No more lost keys, no more accidental lockouts.

Yup! I had my spare hidden on the Lightning 'till I added the keypad to the door..
When I bought the truck, I wondered for the longest time why they gave me a card with a PIN # on it.

I saw on TV where that is the new scam going on by car thieves. They are taking a car VIN to the dealer and trying to get keys made for your vehicle. Most dealers will required proof of ownership, but some have been out to make a quick buck. Its recommeded that you cover up your VIN now.
