A gun in the hand is better than a cop on the phone.

And that is no fault of the police.
If it's simply a theft report call then no its not a priority. If its an in progress call then you respond code typically untill your in the area. I dont know any departments that wouldn't respond in a similar way. An in progress call like that would get a tone anywhere here in Bell county.

I am a cop and it would never happen... I can't believe some of you would even suggest it.... Break in's in progress are priority 0 calls which me they get dispatched immediately no matter what...

I also thought that something in progess would be a priority becuase there's a great chance you can catch the crook & get them off the streets.

Now, if the crime has already happend, then it makes sense that it is no longer a priority, because the crook is gone.

I lived in NJ for 18 years, joined the Military, got stationed elsewhere for 9 years and then moved back to NJ. I've been here for 3.5 years now. In those combined 21 years, I have NEVER seen a NJ cop, state trooper or local, do ANYTHING other than sit on the side of the road and generate ticket revenue with a radar gun...

Even when my neighbor was attacked by two stray dogs they didn't even bother to show up until I called back and asked if I could shoot the dogs (I was told I would be arrested for discharging a firearm in township limits), so yes the trick about telling the cops you've got a gun works very well. They at first told me to call animal control even as my neighbor was being torn up by two dogs. My neighbor spent 2 weeks in the hospital. Upon his discharge from the hospital, he promptly sued the PD for not doing anything. He settled out of court for 6 figures$$$$. He moved like 6 months afterward cause the cops would follow him everywhere he went after the lawsuit.

KC-10 FE out...

Angry

I live in a suburb of Los Angeles that has a population of over 55,000 people. Not exactly 'rural'. I DID have a failure to resond to a crime in progress by our local PD.
From late 2001 to mid 2002 I had a neighbor that was using his house for a 'flop house'. Lots of bad people coming and going at all hours. Obvious signs of drug use and harboring runaways, etc. Myself and neighbors were calling police very often for numerous problems. Various inhabitants of that house tried to enter my home on 3 different occasions. They were 'stoned' and would show up at my door by mistake in the middle of the night. Sometimes they would bang on the door when they could not get it open. We reported every event and we had meetings with high ranking police officials to discuss various options.
Early on a Wednesday morning, I was awakened by my wife and daughter screaming and a fight was occurring outside my bedroom window. In fact, bodies were bouncing off the outside of my bedroom wall. Pictures were rattling, window was shaking, etc. At least 3 men were involved in this very physical atercation. I pulled my gun from its secure location and took my family to the other side of the house while I called police. I was told that all available units were involved in a burglary and pursuit. They could not send anybody. I was asked if there was a possibilty that serious harm would occur. I told the dispatcher that depended on how hard they were hitting my wall with some guys' head. As we spoke, several cars raced away from the house. The call than became low priority.
I made the call just after 4:30AM. My neighbors tell me the police showed up after 8AM and pulled everyone from the house. Lots of shakedown, no arrests. I leave for work at 7AM. I was not around to see it.
Luckily, a bank foreclosed on the house and the occupants were evicted in the Summer of 2002. I now have good people living there.
My son was an 'Explorer Scout' for this PD. I have lots of friends there and other PD's in So Cal. I understand the concept of limited resources. I do not blame the officers for being spread so thin. I do NOT understand the liberal philosophy that our Citizens cannot be trusted to defend themselves. Some believe that protecting life and property is the exclusive domain of police. The citizens should just 'stand down' and be good witnesses.
At the end of the day, we are all respnsible for our own safety. Personally, I like to keep a couple of guns around to level the playing field. I also own a large dog. If they get past the dog and the gun, they have to deal with my wife. I say 'LET THEM BE WARNED!'.
As you can see, I am a proponent of the 2nd amendment and a card carrying NRA member.
Good luck from the People's Republic of Kalifornia.

I totally agree. I am a cop also, and with our department we run "hot" (lights and siren) to those calls.....VERY high priority. But if the crime has already occurred and the thief is gone, we are not going to put others possibly at risk by running hot to get there right away.
