Fireman in here?
Fireman in here?
I'm still trying to find another job, and I've been thinking about being a fireman. It's time for spring recruiting, or will be soon, and I'm just curious what you guys think...
My buddy's uncle is a fire chief, and several of his cousin's are fireman, so I think if it's politics I might have a little help... I'm not concerned about the physical part of it. I'm a little out of shape, but I wouldn't say it's bad.
I just want to do something that makes a difference. I get so tired of my job. Nothing ever matters, and it's just a bunch of BS around the shop so often...
I'm also curious, do I have to have my EMT certification before applying, or will I be given a chance to get that afterwards (assuming I would get the job)?

I'm not a fireman but I once stayed in a Holiday Inn Express.
I thought I wanted to be a fireman once. Signed up at the local Fire Academy. I think it was a 12 week course or something, cost a few hundred bucks. About halfway through I came to the realization that being a firefighter was nothing like what I expected and it wasn't for me. But anyway, your first step is signing up for the Fire Academy and completing the course. From there you can start looking for a job and then get further training (EMT, etc.)

What's up C-Loser? Ha ha...just kidding. You may remember that I joined the fire department here in January. I don't graduate recruit class until April 1, but I can tell you that I am already LOVING it. It is everything I wanted and then some. The feeling of accomplishment at the end of the day is unreal, and I am not even 'technically' in a station yet. Plus, the little kids EVERYWHERE just think you're the greatest. Oh yeah, and you get discounts on just about everything that someone can put a price tag on...which is pretty cool.
Anyway, for the serious stuff.
As far as going to the academy before trying to get hired, I think it's a good idea. I had no training whatsoever before I got hired. This is the first rookie class that they have hired that did not require previous experience. There are two of us out of 11 with no experience. I would check with your local departments and find out what their requirements are.
Obviously, the more qualified you are for the job before you get hired, the better. That way, not only do you already know what you're doing, but the department doesn't have to spend so much to get you qualified.
You will be given the opportunity to get whatever qualifications you want after you're hired...they encourage it.
That's just my two cents.
Oh yeah...if you have strings...YANK THOSE *****'s!

Join a volly department and train via the academy through them. This way you get a feel for the job while looking for a paid position
I'm a volly and love it. I wish I had enough sense years ago to get on a paid dept. I'm too old to do such now, but your young enough to go for it.
Best of luck to you in your carrier path

So you want to be a fireman?........First thing you need to do is get into shape. Don't focus on jogging, run stairs. If you have access to a stepmill at a gym even better.
You need to find out what jobs are available where you live, if you live in the middle of nowhere you may have to move. In some parts of the country you can't buy a fire job and other places are begging for them.
Get your certifications, Firefighter I & II and EMT. If you want to bite the bullet go all the way through and get your medic's license you can write your own ticket.
Becoming a volunteer can be a double edged sword, some of the smaller departments may think it's nice but some of the bigger departments don't like volunteers and they will use the against you. Some volunteer departments can teach you some really bad habits that career departments don't want to train you out of. Some stuff like calling fire "the dragon" and "the beast". They'll have you saying stuff like "I walk where the devil dances". Stuff like that makes you a spank and, again, some career departments don't like that.
Definetly use your pull that you have with your buddy. Getting a fire job is more political than anything so every little bit helps.
Good luck!
