Gun guys question-Red Dot Scopes

Hey guys, I was just wondering if anyone has or has had a "red dot" type scope. I recently purchased a Ruger MKIII .22 pistol and wanted to get a scope for it. I will mainly be using it for plinking and maybe some varmints.

Any suggestions?

How are the red dot/holographic scopes other than pricey?

Thank you

I bought a red dot scope for my Browning BAR 30-06. I think it was about $135.00 (CDN). I think you get them at Bass Pro Shops. Mine works great! I have a Bushnell Red dot. You can change it from cross hairs to a red dot to a medium sized red dot to a empty circle. The red dot does not leave the scope it's inside.

It's great for target practice or hunting. 3 other guys I hunt with all have them and love them. Tasco makes a good red dot as well. They are pretty easy to set up as well too. A box of shells should be more then enough.

Mines the bottom link. It's the Bushnell Trophy Multi-Reticle Scope. It works great. I'm not sure how it will work for a 22 hand gun? I would imagine it should be fine.

I was looking at both types. I kind of like the first one better because it is more low profile. Which is not as much an issue with a rifle.

So, a red dot is not projected onto the target, correct?

Remember that even when your using a red dot scope, it still comes down the basics like trigger control and sight alignment.

The red dot does not display on the target. Just inside the scope only. I think those that project a red beam are illegal. I think they are only for Police use only. Besides they are not good for distance anyways. If you think you can see a red dot 50 yards away you have awesome eyes like an eagle.

The first scope would be fine for a 22 hand gun. The second one is for shot guns and rifles I believe. Might be too bulky for a hand gun. My mom has a S&W 22 and that scope would be too big for it (size wise). Depends on the length of barrel too. Any thing over 8 inches that first scope would be great. You would have to try it out. Everyone shoots different and everyone has their own shooting style.

My next hand gun will be a Glock 9mm or a Colt Anaconda 44 Mag. I shot one a bunch of times at a hand gun range and had a blast with it! The 44 is a bit of a handful. But it's still fun to shoot.

Not to mention they are hard to see in broad daylight. I have a laser boresighter that I tried to use to sight in my rifle. @ 100yds it was invisible.

Yeah you can't see it on sunny days or bright over cast days anyways.

Good luck on what ever you choose! Any questions just ask (I'm not an expert by any means). I just learned about the red dot last summer.

You can't go wrong with any of these.

http://www.larrysguns.com/ultradot.asp

I have 3 of the match dots, and about 6 of the 1" ones.

They are great, dots are round and don't flare.

I have a few aimpoints (the original red dot) they are great also, just 2-3 times the price.
