Check out this minigun video

Too cool. Lots of tracers makes it look like a laser straight out of Star Wars.

I need one of these. I have lots of vermin to exterminate...

OK . . . can someone please explain what causes that (tracer fire?)

I'm not even sure what's it's called.

Is there something special about the ammunition, or is it coated with something that causes it to burn a trail, or is it that it is just coming out with such force and speed that it burns a trail?

The munitions challenged (that would be me) wish to know.

I'm not sure about those but I know with the one on the A-10 you only have a maximum trigger pull time of 18 seconds before the gun will melt.

Most have phosphorus in them. The gau-17 on the UH-1's are pretty cool. The marines would test fire them off the side of the ship

I'm sure the Military guys will jump in here eventually, but I've been told that there is a type of "phosphorus" material in the powder, that "burns" a trail after the round clears the barrel...called a tracer round. I was told that it is usually every fifth round has this, and it's function is to show where the rounds are going when you are in full auto. Now, I'm not sure if this is the case with this chain gun, as it sure seems that every round is a "tracer" the way they flow out... My question is, what caliber is this gun? .20 MM ?

My buddy in the navy says it's 7.62 NATO but I really have no idea.

If you like that video you'll love this site:

December's minigun of the month looks quite lethal...

And this one shoots BB's:

Yes, those are tracer rounds, and some of you are pretty close as to what they are.

They are coated with a special material (The actual round, not the gun powder) that burns as the bullets travels through the air (at well over 3,000 fps). This is more for night fire than for day fire for the reasons you pointed out- so the firer can see where the rounds are going, and to make sure they are going where intended.

The amazing thing about this is that although the fire seems constant, there are anywhere from 3 to 5 to 7 "unseen" rounds between the tracers. In other words, there's a whole lot more "hurt" going down range than the video can illustrate.

Bottom line: You don't wanna "eff" with the US Military.

That looks like the often noted, but rarely seen 7.62mm mini gum (Have you ever seen "Predator"?). I think if we had more of those on the doors of the UH-1's in Vietnam, there would have been a lot fewer ambushes at the LZ's.... An M-60 will ruin your weekend too; but not like a gattling gun. And just think, the guns you saw firing are "slow" compared to the 20mm M-61 Vulcan and the 30mm GAU-8 Avenger.

I'm not an expert....I go to the local base and watch the airlplanes target practice on occasion...It is very cool to watch! Anyway they tell us when they run tracers it is No more than every 3rd round. Anymore than that and it would melt the barrell. The last ones I watched they shot .50 cals. at I believe 200 rounds a minute from the aircraft and it looks like almost a constant stream....In the video it appears to be dumping several more round a minute than that but I could still see breaks in the streams and in the muzzle fire during the burst....

Interesting fact...The last planes I watched they told us that they can not hold down the trigger for more than 20 secs because the recoil will slow the plane down to much and it would crash.

What version of the 7.62 round does it use? I'm assuming 7.62 X 39. That video was incrediably fast! I can not see the spent casing.

Edited to add:
I've seen predator but has been a Long time....Dont tell me Arnold used this as a GPMG...

7.62x39 is what the russians used in the AK47. 7.62 used by the us is called 7.62 NATO which is 7.62x51.

Sorry I thought the 39 was Nato, The chinese also use it in the SKS it's probably the most common round that I see so I assumed it anyway.

Don't need to apologize. There are so many 30 cal rounds anymore, it is real easy to get them mixed up.
