Looking to buy an F150 auto or 5 speed?

I'm looking to buy a 97+ F150 V8 4x4. I owned a manual before (87 5.0 mustang). The look of the manual in the F150 looks a little weird with that really long shifter. I never drove one and I was wondering how you guys like your manuals in a truck?

Sorry, never driven one myself.

You might try posting your question in the Transmissions section for a quicker answer.

Welcome to the site though.

Figured it's more of a general driving question not a tranny problem question hehe. Thanks for the welcome... once I get my truck it'll be modding time (exhaust and intake for starters... then chip, rims, system )

dunno of any trucks with short shifters... but the manuals will last longer but the autos of course are easier if u do alot of city driving. so all comes down to home much driving u do and where u drive most of the time

The manual is rated at 3500 pounds tow capacity vs. auto that is significantly higher. Besides the typicaly auto vs. manual, that's the only thing special regarding F-150's.

Well...we have a 2000 4x4 superduty diesal that is a 5 speed...Dont know if it is close to the same or not but if you live in the country it is nice, but any stop and go driving you will want the auto. I wish now that I had got the automatic cause going to work here there are always traffic jams and my foot about falls off trying to push that big clutch in and out.

I owned a 98 F150 4X4 with a 5 speed. Yeah, there is a long throw to it, but it is a truck. I had a borla exhaust and a K & N air filter, but that was about it. It was fun to get on an exit onto the highway in third up around 4500 rpm then put her in fourth at about 80mph. I was also able to squeeze 25 mpg out of it on a 300 mile road trip at 50mph (driving in a SLOW convoy). Sometimes I miss it, but after having an auto in my supercrew then my newer supercab, I probably will never own an stick again, well, except for the 67 fastback I'm getting in a few years.

I'd rather eat worms than drive an automatic.

The truck doesn't need that long shifter if:

A) You got long arms or

B) You got a girlfriend who will do what you tell her to do when you tell her to do it.

thanks for the response guys... my truck isn't gonna be used for towing just regular driving... I'm looking to make the truck sporty. Can't afford a lightning though.

i have around 93,000 miles on my 5 speed (4.6 x cab 4x4)

its been trouble free and fun.

still hoping they will have the 5.4 in a stick when i am ready for my next f150. (also dont want to buy it in its first year out).

other than the syncrho's grinding ever now and again (no big deal) its been a beautiful thing.

I have and prefer the automatic myself. It has nothing to do with performance it's just preference.

Welcome to the site!! Hope you get the truck!

Many are under the impression that a 5 speed is quicker (sportier). I have no idea where people get that idea. I drove a standard for 9 years and swore I'd never buy a stick shift again. Rowing gears is a pain in the ****, your truck is worth less money, they are slower getting up to speed, you can't tow as much, etc. etc. etc.

After driving an 8 speed roadranger all day the last thing I want to do is shift gears.
