spell check problem in outlook xpress

Hey you computer wizards, another question I need answered please:

When I type an email on outlook express, when I'm finished, I click on "tools", and then select "spelling" to run a spell check.

On this new computer however, the "spelling" is greyed out, it won't let me select it.

Anyone know how to fix this?

Thanks

the misspelled words are grey'd out how. are u refering to outlook express using XP. never heard of this problem. check google.com groups. they are a good knowledgebase. but sounds to me like the user ur are logged onto does have adminstrative permissions to access that feature. check see if any other accounts have that problem and also check the spell check settings. if u hadnt already. make sure that if ur member of local users groups that u have sufficient privilages. .

Do you have microsoft word installed? I'm pretty sure it uses the spelling and grammar check from word for outlook express.

That's it ccla, thanks.
I had a copy of small business, and can't find it.
I hope I don't have to go buy it again, blah.

Thanks again, now I know why it's not working!

Habibi,

If you can't find Office, you can download a free spell checker that adds into Outlook Express here:

OE Spell Checker

THanks fellas.
Jim, downloaded the file from the link you posted, and now I'm back in business.

Still can't find my copy of MS office (we moved in the summer, so go figure, could be anywhere)

At least I have spell checker now, woo hoo!

With all of the security and vulnerability issues I've heard of with Outlook and especially Outlook Express, I am surprised anybody is still using it. I don't even think Microsoft even supports it anymore. I heard that Microsoft discontinued Outlook Express rather than fix all of the issues.

Try using Mozilla Thunderbird.

They have since decided to continue to support it.

OE is so widely installed it would be difficult to just drop it so they haven't

Outlook itself necessarily a risk providing you have all the security patches.

O and OE are targeted by hackers due to the huge number of installed copies which makes it worth the investment in time to hack.

Thunderbird is nice, tried it but still prefer my O 2003. It support my pop accounts and allows secure connections to my Exchange server via the net without a seperate VPN connection.

I do use Firefox as my browser though...much nicer than IE

My personal favorite POP3 mail client is Eudora. Been using it for so long I can't stomach anything else.

I found out the same as you that OE does not come with spellcheck. I ended up getting spellcheck when I downloaded Microsoft Works (free, less intense version of Word).
And unlike many of the posters in this thread, I LIKE most of Microsoft's programs.
