Moving to England in the summer
Hi all,
Just found out that I will be moving to England this summer (I'm in the Air Force). I have a 2004 F-150 that is not quite 1 year old. Anyone know if it is worth it to put my truck in storage for the time I am over in England (3 years), or is it possible to bring the truck over to England with me? My wife's car is a Nissan Altima that is paid off and small (much better suited for European roads). Anyone been stationed in England and can give me some insight? I really don't want to sell my truck since I ordered it with everything I could possibly want in a vehicle and I would take a big hit for being upside down.
Any thoughts or advice would be very helpful!

Hi vtn,
Where are you being stationed? RAF Mildenhall?
Lots of people take their cars over. You see plenty on the roads which are not as small as you might think.
Just remember to drive on the opposite side of the road and you will be ok
Here's a terrible deal for you. Drop your truck off to me in Houston and you can drive mine while you are in England.
Save on the shipping

Spent 6 years total there. I would take the wife's car. Gas prices will kill you. I had an aerostar van and it was a little wide on some of the back roads. But you could sell the ford for a profit over there.
Just did a search for Petrol prices. The national average is 39p a liter. Meaning around $3.00 a gallon.
.39p = approx $.70
1.00p = $1.86 currently

I'm going to be at RAF Moleworth just west of Alconbury.
I figured gas would be a major issue, too. The thought of putting my baby in storage for all that time really hurts me, though. I guess I'll just have to buy one of the beaters over there for $500 to get me to work everyday so the wife can go sightseeing.
Any recommendations on what I'll need to do to prep the truck for long term storage? Jackstands, remove battery, put the additive in the gas, make sure it is temperature controlled and keep comprehensive insurance on it. This is what I think I need to do, who has done this for real and can tell me the real deal?
Thanks in advance.

Make sure the jack stands are under the suspension not the frame. The spring will stretch if you don't.
Have someone take it out every couple months to keep everything lubed. Drive it for a couple hundred miles. If the just drive around the block it will be worse then just letting it set.
Oh Molesworth as far as I remember is a depot base. About 1 hour north of London.

Ed,
Not sure what you mean by that.
Is that the price military personel is paying for gas on a military base or something.
Gasprices in England are even higher than here in Holland and I am paying $6.128/US Gallon for 90 octane.
$3 a gallon, man I wish we had gasprices like that.
vtn98, you don't need to worry much about gas prices. You can buy it on base for about the same as it costs here. They rationed it years ago, but now you can buy all you need. You can also get cupons to use, in case you are traveling and have to buy gas off base. You still pay the same (US) prices. A lot of GIs have big cars and trucks over there. One concern though, is that your steering wheel is on the left side. That makes it a little dangerous trying to see around curves, or....heaven help you if you have to pass a tractor or something.
