A big mistake from Dell
A big mistake from Dell
For work, they give us laptops to carry around so we can do all of our work. We have 3 different ways that we can connect to the internet. We have a jack for our LAN line at our office, we can hook up to a standard phone line, or we can use our wireless aircard(which is the way that I mainly use to connect, because we are out in the field working). Well about a week and a half ago, my aircard quit working. I call up our company helpdesk and after almost 2 hours waiting on the phone, they said it must have been dropped or bumped and they would send a Dell representive out with a new board. I met him at our office one day last week and he fixed it and the aircard started working just like it used to.
Now here is where the mistake comes in. He does all of this work in just under 30 minutes and everything works fine, or so I thought. I get off that night and come home. I don't get a signal on my aircard, so I have to use the dialup modem to connect at home. I try dialing and keep getting errors. I can only do so much because of admin rights, but I went to one screen where it had my modem listed, but showed not present. So this last wednesday, I called up our helpdesk again and after another hour on hold, they said they would send Dell back out again. The guy comes to the house earlier on Thursday and starts pulling the computer apart and he immediately realized why it wasn't working. The guy FORGOT to put the internal modem back in when he was putting the computer back together when he fixed it the first time! There was a blank space where he said that the modem should have been sitting. Luckily he brought one with him and put it in and it worked fine.
Anyone else ever have some thing like that happen? He fixed the original problem, but then created another problem, which he had to come back out and fix again. Luckily, I wasn't paying for any of this or else I would have been very ticked off.

Being the resident IT guy here in our office, I've definitely made mistakes along these lines but, I typically catch them when I'm testing whatever I worked on after I installed it...
I had a network interface card (NIC) go out on a box here. No biggie, it's a 10 minute fix start to finish (if that long). So I pull the box apart, put a card in, test it, it doesn't work. I spent over two hours trying to figure out why I couldn't find the network... I tried drivers, reconfiging the network, new IPs, installing a new sink in the kitchen, drinking tequilla... nothing worked.
Long story short, I realized that I had reinstalled the bad card and the new one was put in the box and thrown away. Luckily, I got to it before it went to the curb but, I felt like a total bonehead. Still do.
We all make mistakes and do stupid things. You're right though, I'd be glad I wasn't paying for it too.

ahhhh....nice to see I ain't alone.....
"Crap...which stick was the good and which was the bad..."
Technically speaking I've got a 50/50 shot of getting the right one....course my luck runs closer to 90/10 in favor of installing the wrong one....

Being in the IT Business for the last 15 years, all I can say is sh*t happens. A few weeks back our primary domain controller hard drive went belly up. One of my fellow techs called my about 8:00 AM on a Sunday morning and said he couldn't get the new drive to fire up. So I came in and after scratching my head for about an hour realized he had replaced the IDE drive with a SCSI.. Now wonder it won't boot... HA HA HA....
Like a said sh*t happens.. Or in other words big brain fart....
