Congo African Grey, they are known to actually carry on conversations and have a vocab of up to 1000 words. I'm trying to buy one here in March.

 

Great! Reminded me of the Yellow-Naped Amazon we use to have. Sunny could not do what the Grey did but he did learn phrases: "Wanna buy a bird?", "Jonathan(our son), come here!", "Where's Danny?", etc.

Before our move north we owned a Grey Congo, Quaker and a Goffin ****atoo (all at once). Our Grey remembered and would repeat an entire conversation that my wife had on the phone including the ring everything in-between and the beep on the hang up. We owned it for 3 years and I truly believe the intelligence to be on par with a 4 yr old human. It would communicate with us. If you decide to buy one you must by ready to dedicate a good portion of you day to them for your entire life as they can out live you. If you ignore them they will pluck feathers from boredom. Also be careful. They will tend to attach themselves to one owner and attack the other from jealously if not introduced to the family together and equal time spent. If we had the time and facilities We would still own him.

What do othey cost and how hard are they to take care of?

Back in Ky the cost was around $1000 if your lucky. Be sure to get hand raised and not something wild/imported. Up here in new england I would guess a congo grey would be around $2000 if you can find one. You need to clean the cage every other day. They crap allot! keep it in a high traffic area in the middle of the family so they get as much attention as possible. At first I did not clip it's wings and He would come and go as he felt. He would always fly to me and hang around as long as I would let him. I had to eventually clip wings and he started to jump from his cage and walk over to me. This started his plucking. If you don't have the time to spend do not get a grey as their intelligence requires constant interaction. If you do have the time you will find the grey will become part of the family. More so than any other pet you've ever owned. Get a book and read up on them first before deciding.

I've got a Timney Gray myself, the smaller cousin of the Congo (if I remember correctly. His name is Ben, and not only is he a member of the family he is the head of the household. He feeds my poodle, reminds her when it's time to go peepee, tells me what she says when I'm not around, sounds off the smoke detecter from time to time, repeats all kinds of things, he has one favorite word that rhymes with sit that he knows exactly how and when to use, he also can imitate any bird that's ever been in the yard... I have to keep telling him he's a bird, and he needs to quit barking, but that's one of his favorite things, and it's very convincing...

The worst thing he ever did was mimic the creak of the front door in the middle of the night... needless to say I didn't sleep for awhile...

He loves to have his head scratched, and he likes back rubs... and yes definately an attention hog. Like someone above mentioned it's very much like having a 4 year old... but as I'm sure most parents would agree, it's worth it...
