Vehicle inspection in Texas
Vehicle inspection in Texas
Need info. My 2002 supercrew's inspection is due. I have the airforceone intake and the superchips max microtuner in the performance mode running 93 octane fuel. Do you think there will be a problem getting it inspected with these mods? Thanks
Id say your in the clear. THe only thing you have to worry about during inspecitons is ususally lights/blinkers/brakes/horn, etc. If they do smog tests, theyll hook up your exhaust pipe(s) and see if its running efficiently, to see if your converters are working properly.
A chip and intake isnt likely to be a cause for concern.

No- you shouldn't...
When I was stationed at Ft. hood, they said they only time you have to worry is if your "Check Engine" light is on.
They will fail you if you don't have that VSEC sticker certifying that your tint is 35% or lighter. Some of the "Newby inspectors" will even use the lightmeter to make sure you're in compliance.
I failed at one (I had 20% in front, 5% in rear; but went to the tint shop; they guy there new this other guy, and told me to tell him he sent me. An extra $10 later, and we were rolling.
It's not what you know, it's who you know....

In TX they really only check to see if your CEL is on and if it is passing in the smog test (according to the computer). They didnt even run my truck on the older style test where they actually drive the car in the shop to measure the gasses in the exhaust.
emission inspection
here in the redneck counties in Pennsylvania they have a regular yearly inspection and an emission inspection, the emission inspection is $30 extra, and all thats checked is ur gas cap, and to check if ur catalyic converter is on ur truck, they don't test the exhaust gas, just a visual to see if the cat is on. I mean you could have removed ur cat and punched out the insides and reinstall it, and it would still pass cause its on ur truck, and of course, ur gas cap always fails and they want $30 extra for a new one, where you can get a new gas cap at any auto parts store for $5, Some people complain "It would be cheaper just to buy a new gas cap than being charged spending $30 to check ur gas cap" So what I do before i get my emission inspection, i stop and buy a new gas cap and keep it in my glove box, and when they tell me "Sir ur gas cap failed" I tell them "I have a new one in my glove box, Now in the populated areas in Pa they have a full emissions inspection where they check computer codes in ur truck, ur computer will spit out bad emission codes, and it won't pass untill ur emission parts are fixed, the biggest problem they have is if u bring ur truck in with a check engine light on, or a stored code that was never cleared, even if it has nothing to do with emissions, it still won't pass untill that code is cleared.
They still plug into the diagnostic port to check for any 'Hidden' codes. As far as the intake if you get flack about it just point out your 'CARB" label ( you did put that on did'nt you) that came with the intake. If it's legal in California it's legal everywhere.

Yeah, TX does that too (Certain places).
Up here the inspection stickers cast $40.00 (Up from $10.00) because of the emissions tests they started in 1999. They got me one time too- at the Firestone service center on Park & Ohio in Plano, TX. They were going to fail my 1997 Maxima in 1999 because I needed new windshield wiper blades. $28.00 later I was super-p!ssed. He told me if I left the shop to go buy blades (Not refills alone, blades & refills), they'd fail may car and I'd have to pay ANOTHER $10.00 to get it re-inspected (Which, upon reflection would have been cheaper). So I stupidly bought the wiper blades.
After that; when inspection sticker time comes, I put in my new refills myself, and leave the Aanco box where the inspector can see them. Now that Collin County does emissions inspections too; they just hook your car up to the machine and it diagnoses the car; if your car is older, they put a wand up the tail pipe, and put your car on a dyno to see what kind of gasses your car is spewing...
My mother-in-law was holding on to her old 1986 Crown Victoria; that car ran like new, didn't smoke and was well-maintained; but it failed a bunch of times. She sunk $1,200 into getting it fixed before it passed. The car wasn't worth $1,200 according to blue book; but- this is another way of ripping off the consumer in the name of the environment.
