Tailgating

I was listening to Glen Beck on the radio, and he was talking about what to do when you have a tailgater behind you. He was saying he had rear fog lights on his car that he could switch on, a caller called in that he runs his windshield washers that squirt up over his car, and falls on the tailgater. What I do that drives the tailgaters wild, and makes them back off is I ride the center line so they can't see ahead of me, they tailgate you when ur driving a big, high truck cause they can't see whats ahead. I was just wondering what everybody else does when someones on their rear bumper.

I had a Range Rover tail gating me one day on the highway. He had to been about a foot off my rear bumper. I was in the middle lane of a 3 line highway. No one was around? so I don't know why this guy was tail gating me. So I got pissed an stomped on the brake (kinda dumb now that I think about) but this Range Rover shot out serving and skidding he came close to the gaurd rail. He slowed down and then pulled off the highway. I find if I get tail gated for no reason I go even slower. It drives them nuts!

I like the fog light idea.........I am gonna figure out a way to setup 2 spotlights and use that.

I switch lanes, slow down some more, switch back behind them, and tailgate right back.

If they wish to drive faster than me, then I let them get around me. It ain't personal, they just wish to be further down the road. I do NOT drive side-by-side with another slowpoke for miles on end while traffic backs up behind me. If someone comes up behind me, I get over or speed up.

On the other hand, I get irritated at tailgaters when there is nowhere to go due to traffic or if they can get around me but tailgate me instread.

I either slow way down and force 'em to pass me or if possible, I creep over to the far side of the road and try to kick up all kinds of chit on their vehicle.

Depends, if I'm going faster than the posted speed limit and there is no chance of them passing I slow down to just under the limit so they have to slow down too. If we're on the freeway I usually just slow down so they'll get annoyed enough to pass me and get off my tail.

back in my early teenage days, we used to cruise the loop in my buddy's brother's 67 stang. He had his backup (reverse) lights hooked to a toggle switch. Had a lotta fun with those, especially at stoplights...

Far be it for me to be sexist...but around here, most tailgaters are women. Is this true anywhere else?

Just to go along with this thread. what type of cars do you most see tailgaiting and aggressive driving. Probably the most I see around here is the newer models of the Nissan Maxima/Altima, then followed by the new Dodge magnum/Chrysler 300 M. Also Jaguars and most full size SUV's. Plus all the ricers out there.

What do I do when someone is tailgating me? I tap my brakes a few times and then slow down to the speed limit. One thing that I ABSOLUTELY HATE is when someone wants to get around you and they can't and they start flashing their lights at you or blowing their horn for you to move out of the way or go faster. When they do that, I will go exactly the speed limit or even slightly slower. They eventually just get by and throw their middle finger out the window at me, but I don't care.

Also MROLDV8, yes, around here most seem to be women or businessmen wearing shirts and ties.

Here in Ma, we have "no fault insurance". If a party is found over 50% at fault, they are then liable for the accident. The one accident that a party is 100% at fault is a - rear end accident.

With that said.....I normally test my brakes as tho I am a performing a brake test for Car and Driver on a testing course.

RJS, I am in agreement with your entire post, but especially the part about not running side by side for miles on end, regardless of the posted speed limit. Simple courtesy, speed up, or get over, or both.

Great post, something all of us should learn!

Depends on what I'm driving. If I'm in my Dad's with aux back up lights, i just flip a switch. Ranch truck- 1987 f250- then its a brake check to see if it has ABS. my truck, i just slow way down. around here, its always people in fancy imports that tailgate.

trick....

dont tap your brakes because you slow down.

tap your 4 way flashers. Your rear lights illuminate but you are mainatining velocity. The tailghater will back off thinking you are on the brakes.

In my youth I was the one to slam on the brakes but now that I have a baby in the backseat Im a little less confrontational.
