Angry Pop-up Help!

I bought my computer about 6 months ago, and all of a sudden I'm getting pop-ups all the time, it's really pi$$ing me off! Anyone know how to make a quick fix for this? I don't know why all of a sudden I have all these pop-ups.....thought I had a pop-up blocker. Thanks.

You probably have spyware or adware. There are some that are harmless but very annoying. One of the pop-ups is probably advertising a product to remove spyware and/or ad-ware from your PC. Rumor has it that they are the ones that infected your PC in the first place. Anyway, they can be very hard to remove in that they replicate themselves and modify your registry. At work, the desktop guys had to run a bunch of different programs and do other stuff to totally eliminate the problem. I would recommend that you check with the company you bought your PC from or a local PC repair company (including Comp-USA, Best Buy, etc) to see if they can clean up your PC. If not, you may have to copy all of the files you wish to save to cd rom and then reformat. This is a last resort only.

Please don't go to Best Buy or pay someone to do this stuff. It is so simple its mind dumbing. It can be more complicated if you have a serious infection but try this first.

Download the following 4 programs they are free and as good as anything you will pay for.

CWShredder

Spybot
Spyware Blaster

Ad-Aware

I'll assume you have Windows XP.

Install all 4 programs.

Open Spybot and run the Search for Updates and download and install all updates.

Open Adaware and Spyware Blaster and do the same.

You can run the scans now but they won't be completely effective.

Once all 3 of these programs are up to date, restart your computer and start hitting F8 (top of keyboard) prior to the Windows flag. You'll get a menu and select Safe Mode (top option). When the computer starts you'll see Administrator and your profiles. Select administrator and then run the programs you downloaded in the following order.

1. CWShredder
2. SPybot
3. Adaware
4. Spyware Blaster

Run the disk cleanup option and empty your recycle bin. Restart your computer normally.

WHile you should disable system restore prior to doing this it may be your only protection if you have screwed something up. The stuff I have given you above is perfectly safe.

When your system starts ...run windows updates and download all critical updates.

Check out Everythingisnt
It is free and it is a modifyication to your hosts file that will block a huge number of known ads. Very easy to install.

Then Take your Internet Explorer and throw it away (partial sarcasm)

You really should look into an alternative browser like Firefox

Good Luck

I have been using Ad-Aware for a long time. I work in tech support, so I need to try and keep myself up to date on software as such.

Just for kicks and giggles, I tried out Microsofts new spyware removal tool......and it friggin works GREAT!

Ad-aware is great but doesn't catch everything. I've tried the MS spyware tool too...Looks promising especially for those that don't know any better. I'm not sold yet but it has potential. I'm just always leary of any MS software for security.
