Soon to own 2000 F150

I'm in the process of buying a used 2000 F150 4.6 with 20,000 miles on it. The owner claims he purcahsed the HD tow package and was wondering how I can tell. Doesn't it have like two tranny coolers or a HD one? Also, did all F150s come with a receiver hitch standard? Thanks

if not all then the vast majority came with reciever hitches.
does it have the 7 pin plug as well as the 4 pin flat?

personally i didn't think you could get a tow package with a 4.6. i'm probably wrong about that though.

the tow package included the reciever hitch, the 7 pin plug, a tranny cooler, and was suppose to come w/ a larger radiator (though a F#@# up, some didn't get the larger radiator). A plug in adapter came w/ it to convert the 7 pin to 4 pin.

If I would have known how horrible the gas milage was on the 6 I would have gone with the 4.6.

There was a big stink here in 2000 about the towing package.
(For info do a search on 'Radiator')

The 2000 model towing package was $400 MSRP and $340 Invoice.

It reads as Follows:
Heavy-Duty Electrical/Cooling Pkg., 7-wire trailer harness, trailer hitch, heavy-duty shock absorbers.

As you can see, the Towing Package included the Heavy Duty Electrical Package however you could purchase the HDEP seperately for $210 MSRP $178 Invoice.

It reads as Follows:
Heavy-Duty Battery, heavy-duty alternator (w/4.2-liter V6 engine), super engine cooling, auxilliary transmission cooler(w/5.4liter V8 engine). Standard Lightning.

This reads like a lawyer wrote it but, as near as I can figure,
you could get a tow package with the 4.6L but you wouldn't get a tranny cooler per the HD electrical package verbage.

This is what amazed me. If you bought the HD Electrical pkg for $210 but you had a 4.6L what did you get?

HD battery was already standard except for the six cyl.
HD alternator was already standard except for the six cyl
tranny cooler came only with the 5.4L

That leaves only one thing for the 4.6L HD electrical pkg =
'super engine cooling"
What was 'super engine cooling' it was a bigger radiator.
Now the kicker,
Since Ford stopped putting the bigger radiator in during 2000,
what did the HD electrical pkg that costs $210 buy?

Z E R O
but that didn't stop Ford from offering that option.

Welcome to the site!! I have a 2000 and I've only got 23,000 miles on it. Helps that I lived in a tiny, isolated Alaska town for 3 years with only one 48 mile long road!! I have a tow pkg on mine too but I've got the 5.4L engine, don't know what the differences would be. I do know that we got money back from Ford about a year after we bought the truck because the paperwork said we got the bigger radiator when in all actuality we didn't. They gave us the option of taking it in to have a new radiator installed or getting a check from Ford. Since going to the dealer meant a $3-400 ferry ride and a couple of nights in a hotel in Anchorage, we opted for the check. Never has had any cooling problems anyhow, even when towing.

Hope you enyoy the truck!!

The refund was $100, or get the radiator replaced. I knew it would cost more the $100 for Ford to replace the radiator, but it wasn't worth it to me to get it swapped out. Going to the dealer is always such a pain - plus I live in Indiana so I shouldn't have worry about my truck over-heating while cruising between the cornfields.

I tow various trailers pretty often (from 18' bass boat, to a ~22' long tandem flat bed, a 7'x14' enclosed trailers, and a few other smaller trailers) and have never had any problems w/ the engine getting hot.

20,000-23,000 miles - how do you do it? Your trucks must still smell new! I thought I was doing good to only have 75,000 mi on mine...

$100! That was it, couldn't remember...23,000 miles on the truck was easy for me. I mentioned we lived in an isolated town, isolated as in no roads in. Only way to get there is by ferry or airplane and the only highway in the area went out 13 miles, paved, to the airport and another 35 miles, unpaved, to the dead end. No place to drive to = very few miles adding up! Juneau has more roads so I'm putting on more miles here but we are still isolated. Juneau is the only capital city in the country inaccessible by road.

What about Honolulu? You can't drive there from the main 48 states...

Yeah, but you can drive around the island to other cities/towns. Like wild-mtn-rose said, there are no roads into or out of Juneau, which is why someone is contantly trying to pass legislation in Alaska to move the capitol to a more accesible city.

Yeah I understand that...I guess what I was trying to say is that both capitals are hard to access for anybody that doesnt live nearby.

Thanks for clearing that up 36. That is exactly what I am refering too. The 36 mile road that runs north out of Juneau ends at a campground and boat launch. We have to take a ferry or airplane to reach another city or town.
