I have always been under the impression that yes, they do get overwritten. The file is saved to your computer under the name "Internet Explorer Wallpaper", so each time you save a new it's saved as "Internet Explorer Wallpaper", overwriting the previous one...

What I did when I traded off my old computer was just did a search for *.jpg and deleted everything, then *.bmp and a few other file types. (this of course was after I got off everything I wanted)

check all your temp directories as well. They are most likely loaded with junk.
