Thumbs up No more SVT Cobra...

In the upcoming Motor Trend, it is reported that Ford will drop the SVT Cobra for the Ford Shelby Cobra.
550hp supercharged all alum 5.4L, live axle, 3400-3500lbs.
Estimated 0-60 sub 4's with a low 12 to high 11 1/4 mile.
It'll be shown at the NYC Auto Show

edit: March 2005 edition of MT has the article.

Wait a minute... I thought they scrapped the new Lightning to focus on the Cobra?! WTF?!

I'm stopping at the Glass House on my way home tonight to give Billy a piece of my mind.

I had read a while back that Carrol Shelby wanted Ford to discontinue SVT and replace the name with Shelby. I thought I had read at the time that Ford had decided to stay with SVT. Sounds as if Caroll Shelby ultimately won.... I wonder if this played a role in the SVT's chief (John Coletti) recently retiring.

Coletti was prolly miffed at his budget getting slashed year after year and less cars to play with. I'd tell Ford to kiss off as well... hell, those baboons up in Auburn Hills are pumping out SRT cars left and right why can't he? It's BS!

That's right- even a SRT-Neon.

Ford- I wonder about you some times...

I like it. I mean SVT is doing the design and everything, they are just using the Shelby name. It actually goes really well with the retro 60's look of the new Mustang. Hey with 550hp I wouldnt bitch a single bit about the name.

Hey, maybe they'll supercharge or turbocharge the Mustang GT, in lieu of the SVT Cobra.

shelby is 82 years old, the only thing he is good for is waddling out on stage during "autorox" and accepting a prize giving a short speech...

He may be knowledable when it comes to cars, but I (as a consumer) would rather pay $35,000 for a SVT Cobra Mustang than $45,000 for a Shelby Cobra Mustang.

I REALLY HOPE BIG BROTHER FORD IS LISTENING.

I don't think the name change has anything to do with the price going up. I think they price is going up because you have an all aluminum supercharged 550hp 5.4L being stuffed in the car. There is a sidebar on one of the pages talking about SVT and its new director. They were saying SVT will probably be ran differently, and that R&D wouldn't just be used for Ford only, but other Ford brands. They also said SVT might pump out a supercharged 300hp AWD Fusion.

The Lightning will be back, I think they dropped it to focus on the Cobra redesign.

Yeah, and name has nothing to do with the cost of other things as well... $1,000 purses from Louie Crappon, $120 jeans from Ralphie Loren, $65 wrenches from snap-on, $500 for a sub box from JL Audio, $10,000 for a decent home speaker setup from B&W, etc...

There's a lot to a name. Shelby = more $$. Premium names get premium dollars. I think it would be a HUGE mistake to start slapping the Shelby name on SVT cars... what a joke. If they want to put out a special edition Shelby, fine... but don't drop your SVT brand to pad the pockets of that geezer and make your loyal speedfreaks pay. Dodge will continue to dominate with SRT crap since they actually get the idea - insane power, factory warrenty, and reasonably priced.

It appears that is the direction.
Horsepower for the insanely rich.
Battery car for everybody else.
