That's precisely what 's supposed to happen. The truck absorbs the energy so that your body doesn't.

Which is why a seemingly minor hit can inflict so much damage on a modern vehicle.

Glad to hear that you are OK. At the very least, I'd sue the guy for what it will take to get you into a new truck identical to the one he totalled, plus your insurance deductable if applicable. You shouldn't be out of pocket one red cent when all is said and done.

First, thank you all for the warm wishes and thoughts, it made the last few days easier to take.

The body shop called me with the estimate. Just under 10k

3 new rims, 2 new tires, front fender, door, cab crush zone, and get this, he bent my rear axel, so that has to be replaced. The shop owner told me my truck isn't a tricky repair, just that its labor intensive, and will take 3-5 weeks. I called a few other shops, and because of all the snow, most shops are backed up right now, so it doesn't look like any sooner.

He showed me a truck in the shop (still in progress) that had a similar cab repair done. If he hadn't showed me the welds, I wouldn't have know it was replaced. He tested my trucks frame, and it is within factory spec, so that's good news.

I feel better today. Still not cheerful, but I keep thinking that Spring is around the corner, I should have the truck back by then, looking forward to driving out on the beach with my wife and doing some surf fishing.

The truck is a 2002 F150 FX4 5.4 engine, reg cab, long bed - I went to Kelly Blue Book, and the "Private Party Value" - which is the one to select for insurance purposes, states the value at $15,550 - if I select the "retail" option instead, it comes back as $19,220 - I selected "good" not "excellent" as the condition.

Well, a little good news today. I finally tired of sharing my wife's car, so I arranged for a rental. I asked for the cheapest thing they had - a Dodge Neon. When I arrived, there wasn't a Neon to be found, so I got a free upgrade - to a 2005 F150 4x4 V8 4 door (what is that called, a crew cab?) with a short bed. Not exactly my truck, but way better than the Neon I had asked for.

It seems to ride a little smoother than my truck, but I like the body style of mine better.

Anyway, that's all the news I have on the accident, the free upgrade made my day!

accident repairs

Jim

Sorry about the accident, but glad everyone is OK. I'll look forward to seeing your newly repaired truck in town near the "tracks". Hopefully the body shop can get to it soon.

Couple of guys down the firehouse have pickups that I thought were totaled when they got into an accident. (they hit each other in snow reponding to a call). They were racked good. The repairs were so good that you can't tell they were in an accident. I am sure yours will turn out the same way.
