Norton Internet Security Professional Question

I bought this software back in May.
Installed it on my and my wifes computer, and no problems whatsoever until today!

I see Norton is disabled, so when I see what the problem is, a screen pops up telling me "activation required"

I click on activation, enter the "Key", and of course, another screen pops up that says

Activation Failed - you have exceeded the maximum number of installations for this product key, please visit our website"

So the number they have listed for Canada and USA is
1-800-745-6055

I've tried a dozen times to get thru, and its always a fast busy signal.

Anyone know what to do?

If I got this software for free or whatever, that would be fine, but I paid $139 for it, and it's only been 8 months, WTF?

It must be some bug or something and would appreciate any recommendations on how to fix this.

Thanks!

Your software key has been used before to activate the software. It is new this year with the Norton products, very similar to the Windows activation.

If you have only installed it on this one system then you definetly have a gripe.

If the number Jamz gave you doesn't work try this one.

800-721-3934 it is there Enterprise support but maybe they can help you anyhow.

BTW $139 for Norton IS is WAY too much.

Habibi,
Have you been loaning this software out for other people to install for free?
If it's been installed on multiple systems and you don't have a multi-user license, you may be screwed.

Keep trying the helpline or you could fully uninstall the program and then re-install it. It may have been corrupted although I doubt it.

Hi you guys,

Thanks for the info.

I finally managed to get through to a live Symantec rep.
When I purchased this software, I installed it on my desktop, my laptop, and my wifes pc.

I feel like an idiot, I didnt know you had to buy the software for each installation.

The rep at Symantec fixed it so it now works on my desktop, but she made it very clear I must buy a fresh copy of the software for each installation. Ouch!!

Man, this seems a bit unreasonable to me, I mean, I only use one computer at a time, this sure seems strict.

I guess I'll be looking for some shareware stuff, I cant see myself paying 3x for the same software.

Do you guys buy the software for each machine you own? That seems harsh.

Actually that is nothing new. That type of licensing is quite normal. It just now they have a way to track it and enforce it.

Iolo's system mechanic is a decent alternative but legally they have the same licenseing rules

Hmmm

Everytime I come to the "end of the road" with my Norton...I just un-install and re-install Norton, and I'm good to go for a full year.

That use to work....but the 05 versions won't work that way anymore. Once the key is used to activate you have 1 year from that date.

I think this is my last year with Norton. I don't mind paying $40-$50 per year but it pizzes me off that they start with the renewal notices and warnings 60-75 days out. Then you must repeatedly click past the renewal notices for updates. Then in the last 2-3 weeks the auto update shuts off, forcing you to update manually. And when you renew, your year starts on your renewal date instead of adding a year on to your previous subscription.

I've tried in the past to get live help for issues but never succeeded. I don't think there is any good way to contact a live person there, so if you have issues you are basically screwed. It's an excellent product but the lack of support is insane for what we spend.

NIS 2005 here.

Rocky,

I agree. The symantec utilities have really dived lately. Really nothing new each year and their subscription service sucks. I've seriously considered switching too after this year but I've had NU since the old blue and white DOS version.

I dont like Norton IS, it came with my mom's Dell laptop and it always gave us problems accessing the internet.

There are programs that are free that will do everything NIS does (and IMO do it better)
Firewall:
http://www.zonelabs.com
Virus Scanner:
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/

plus the usual spyware blockers/scanners/etc

I would go ahead and keep NIS on your desktop since you already have it (and I agree, you paid WAY too much for it, I think I've seen it for like $40 or less at Sam's), and install the free apps on your laptop and your wifes PC.
